I went out to the coop this morning and found one of my chickens laying in the large black water bowl and she had passed. I guess I'm just confused bc she always lays in the nesting box at night and was surprised to find that this morning. Any ideas on why she would do that? It was snowing and a bit colder last night

Do you think the chicken was there from dark last night or died this morning?
Possibly she knew something was wrong, went to get a drink and died at that time.

How tragic and sad. It's not likely she was trying to use the water bowl as a nesting box, though. More likely she either was sick and weak and collapsed as she was trying to take a drink and drowned or got so wet that she quickly became unable to move from hypothermia. Look for an underlying health issue here, not what you assume from the death scene.

It looked like she got in and laid down she looked really peaceful actually. But when I put them away she was laying in the nesting box. I'm assuming it happened after the sun came up

How big is the water bowl? Must be pretty big if a chicken could climb in and lay down in it. Is it possible that she somehow got/fell in and then couldn't get back out?

It's fairly big, fits about a gallon or more of water. She could of gotten out of it. I've never seen a chicken get into the water. But she was laying in it with her head up
