hello everyone, just wondering if anyone else here raises fish or plans to raise fish.
this can be about anything that involves fish. feel free to talk about your talks and pets.

i used to have fish for pets but they all died (just the simple aquarium fish) and now we have a small tank full of gold fish (about 30 gallons with maybe 5 in it) but got a bigger tank of about 40 gallons.

also wondering if anyone here raises fish to eat. we have a dugout on a farm we own (its rented out to a cattle farmer) and plan to maybe raise trout in it. also would be very interest in some small scale aquaculture of maybe trout again in an IBC tote system.

I keep gold fish, about 30 currently in a 75, and a 125 gallon, and the big ones go out to my approximately 250 gallon pond in the summer. I also have a 55 tank with tropicals.

I have downsized over the last few years, but goldfish are my favorite. My older ones, I always joke are big enough to eat, but we don't raise eating fish here. We would like to dig a big pond someday, but not sure if that will ever happen.

I do raise fish but they are way too small to eat. I also raise freshwater shrimp. My fish are two species of Rainbow fish. My shrimp are a super dark blue type.

I have the bigger species of Rainbow in my 55, and I have a 20 where I keep a few very tiny fish and my shrimp. There are shrimp in the larger tank too but most of the shrimp are in the smaller tank. My tanks are planted with natural plants, and have driftwood and nice rocks in them, to give the livestock a natural setting where they will feel comfortable.

We have considered a pond, and perhaps putting Koi in it. However, when one has an outdoor pond, that will attract things like... raccoons. And great blue herons, and egrets etc. All of these guys love to eat fish. So that's a concern, keeping away predators. It would be fun to have a pond, though.

What are simple aquarium fish?

Also 5 goldfish in a 30 gal doesn't seem ideal, high ammonia producers, 20 gallons per goldfish is ussually recommended.

I have 1 betta in a 20 gallon tank. He has 2 real plants (sold as "betta plants" at Petco in bulb form, one bulb died and 2 grew), and about 15 marimo moss balls in his tank along with 2 fake plants and a little house he likes to hide in.

He also has a filter and heater.

if anyone is interested in aquaculture, you might want to look into aquaponics and grow some plants as well with less water changes.

It depends on your water change schedule and size of fish. I have successfully kept goldfish in 5-10 gallons per fish with 80-90% waters every 7-10 days. I've had the same fish since 2003.

Water quality does make a huge difference, so depending on how much water per water change and how many water changes can allow you to bend the basic rule, but 20 g is the ideal amount, not saying they'll do bad without it, they'll still be healthy goldfish.

I would just use a polyester float with holes to insert the plants for aquaponics.

My current aquarium project is a 20 gallon cube with scaling from the corner, a gentle slope up towards it, black sand and white sand at the opposite corner. A peice of tall, branching driftwood will be in the focus corner.

Depends on what type of fish and what type of plants. Some fish will eat the roots off of your plants and kill them, and some plants don't like to have their "feet" that wet all of the time and prefer to grow in a well draining substrate where their roots aren't being drowned.
