You can raise it up on small bricks or a piece of wood

I struggled with the same thing! If it wasn't shavings in the water, they had knocked it over completely when I tried to raise it a bit. I bought a waterer for rabbits, ferrets that has the metal tube end on it. I saw it somewhere on this site. When my chicks move to their coop (within the next 3 days) I have a nipple waterer so I thought this was good practice. They learned super quickly. Wish I would have done it earlier.
