Play sand works great, as it is generally cleaner...

You can also use parakeet grit from pet stores...

I have heard that you can use parakeet grit also, it just needs to be small enough since they are still tiny. We didn't give them much other than their crumbles until they were about 4 weeks old. And only give it to them a few times a month, they won't need it daily.

TELL ME ABOUT IT!! We have a half acre and in our minds we think we own some huge ranch and talk about all of the animals we want! Those ducks were hilarious, I had no idea they were so full of character, loved it!!

They didn't even have (the 3 places in my area) grit for birds like parakeets. I was suprised as well, I did not think I would have a hard time finding it - esp. considering I live in an area that is still very populated by farms & having backyard chickens is very common *shrugs*

I'll go to Lowes & see if they have play sand, I imagine they will. How long do you use the sand for the chicks? My babies are only 2 weeks old, so still very young & we don't plan on giving them treats just yet. I've just read that it's good to start them early, so was thinking I should.

Ahh that's good to know that I shouldn't give it to them daily!

Totally! My husband had ducks growing up (he's from Ireland) and LOVED them. Always talked about how funny they are - oohh half an acre would even be nice - and you mean that's NOT a huge ranch?

I would fill it up with animals so fast! So I totally get ya lol

Go to mypetchicken.com, you can buy grit there if Lowes fails you (don't know if they have sand or not but seems they should). Oh man....Ireland is the best

Went there about 10 years ago for my friend's wedding, she married an Irishman too

and yeah, we are pretty lucky with the half acre, coming from apartments it really feels like a ranch!!

My full grown chickens eat sand too. So they can have it for however long you give it.

Lol. I live on about... 15 acres... I am just getting back into the animal raising though. I used to raise ducks, quail, goats, pigs, horses, and now chickens. Lol.

Ireland really is the best - I lived there for a few years and then we moved to the states (for me, back home). I miss is greatly!


CCourson - ohhh 15 acres!!! Adopt me! lol Also - good to know on the sand! Do you feed regular sized grit to your grown chickens as well? Or does the sand do the job?

I feed grown birds oyster shells, but they also have a large run, so they can find rocks... And they are actually on a very shallow gravel pit, so they don't have to dig down far... however, i face the muddy run situation.. But it can't be helped...

I switched to a rabbit waterer (bottle). I added a couple more once I saw they were using it successfully. It worked wonderfully.
