I'm actually glad that I didn't put in a garden this year; what with our record high temps. and the drought. Farmer neighbor said they only had watermelons with lots of irrigation and the only thing that thrived was sweet potatoes.
My husband had just brought home wood sand my SIL had delivered some for raised beds before my husband died. We had only been here 3? 4? months. I had planted flowers, started to measure out my landscaping ideas and planted strawberries, tomatoes and I can remember what else. I just didn't take car eof it after he died, so this year the strawberries still tried to come up. I was gone for 3 days and no one to water anything.. Got really hot and my strawberries all died off. I wish I could afford to set up some hoops covering my raised beds that still aren't even carried to the back yard and cover them like green houses this winter. I know what I would do if I could move enough to get it done and could afford it. Thing is if I use household money and buy the supplies I need and something doesn't grow, I'm out on both counts. Think I'll just see what I can grow in the winter besides green onions. LOL
BTW these watermelons are big and juicy. Last one I bough at the store had no flavor, pale color and just blah.
