I am SO glad that she is feeling much better!!

I hope that she keeps getting stronger!

Maude's poo is getting less watery and more brown, but loose, with white. She pecks at different things and I make sure she gets a few hours several times a day outside. She will peck at grass. Today we were out many hours over the day. I try to keep it to one or two hours at a time. Her crop is soft but not watery where you hear water. I still have her on the tylan. The vet did say by slight chance that it could help if the tumor was irritated or infected by something..hey I will grasp at straws before I give up totally and Maude does not show signs of distress or pain.
Her belly is not as soft as it should be, but does not feel like clay like it did. She does not haunch or droop her wings or tail. She is shinny, sleek and stands proud, but don't let that fool you, she is ready for sleep after and hour or two outside. She has been giving voicing opinions when she wants to be where she wants to be, not where you think she should or if you want to take her in before she is ready to go. That is more like the Maude I know. She has always been a real opinionated girl! Some times just plan bossy, so this is good to see.

I took her out tonight to scratch and dig those tiny worms only chickens can see and visit with some of the flock. She was happy that she could take a (light peck and hiss) at the bantams that were wanting in on the human assisted scratching. lol..She wanted recognition from Big Daddy Cletis but not that certain attention. So I made sure he could talk to her and give her a dance but not getting more than 2 feet. She seemed extremely pleased that he was interested or remembered her(?)and when I brought her in, instead of standing in the sand box she was wanting to roost. She got past DH when I went out to close up the coop and duck pen. I found her on my dining room hutch! So I set her up a place on an old arm chair (padded wood arms, 40s chair)with plenty of paper...just in case and she drifted off to sleep looking quite happy. I am sure she will not be happy when I put her in the bin (I use big plastic laundry baskets, good open ventilation) with a top over it for the night before I go to bed.

I keep checking her breath and rubbing the belly and crop, nothing smells bad or gassy. She is sicker than she looks and sicker than she wants to let on, but far from deaths door like earlier this past week. She does not seem to be losing anymore weight.

I did pick up some omega 3 and essential oils called kickin chicken at the feed store (not sure if I posted since that day) and I give some on the feed. The other chickens seem to like it and worse the dogs seem to love it..My one cocker has to be on lamb and rice food since corn and grains give him a skin allergy which makes me allergic to his skin...lol..oh well I am still happy with the progress of Maude that I don't care... Now I have chickens, bird and dogs eating crumbles..

Thanks for keeping up with Maude and me, will keep you posted with her progress. Always want to share anything poultry that may help other BYC'ers.

You are an exceptional person
Maude is extremely lucky to have you
You have inner strength and courage
It sounds as if your Maude has the same.
It is great to hear Maude is doing better lol
You have a great way with words I can see her batting her eyes at your roo lol

You very kind Max 101. Have always wanted to go to the land under, was just afraid if I did I may not want to come back.
Today was going to warm up into the high 50s so I planned a special day for Maude. When you are stuck in hospital for a few days it is enough to make you feel bad, no matter how many trips they let you make walking around. I figured the same should be for chickens. So I pulled the sides up on the duck pen, laid a little fresh hay (they have about 8 inches if not a foot since it gets into the 20s at night) the ducks have a coop in the pen but like being in the open. Anyway had a full day planned for Maude to be outside. All 35 of the other chickens visited her (through the wire sorta speak), the ducks could care less..lol as long as she was out before it was their time to go in, have a nightly swim and gobble up food.
I dug her a good clump of dirt with new baby soft grass. She loved it. She would get tired here and there and retire to the ducks coop but when she came back out, the other chickens all visiting each time she stood by the wire. The one little bantam Millie Fleur (Flo) who got a few pecks from Maude yesterday was up for a challenge, since there was fencing to ward off any new pecking. So the two of them stood for about 5 minutes giving their best growls and head to the ground and back up (like a couple of roos). All in all I think she had a good day. She made sure her dirt with grass was brought in with her. She would head for the kitchen door every time I put her back in the papered area until I brought it in, in a pan. Who's spoiled and who's trained?!
Her poos are still weak. watery in the morning and infrequent during the day and loose with some water, but not bright green and not as much water. Her belly feels more supple, but can still feel the tumor, but kind of hard and flat, not so big. Just hoping that after today, (I will stop the tylan since it is not good for them to be on it so long) that it does not increase in size again.
If this goes on for another week I will check back with the vet to see what he thinks. Would hate to think that she will be weak and have to stay penned (for her protection) from here on out. Will keep you posted but probably not so frequent as not to take up too much space with chatter if nothing changes.

I case you are wondering. This was Maude on the 2nd of March,

This was Maude tonight on her much wanted pan of grass and roosting on the only chair I will let her on.

You can see she is looking better each day, but no where near her 100%, more like 35% to 40% of the Maude I know. Feather fluff sure can hide huge weight loss and if they don't look sick or act sick you may not know until the last minute. Now I make it a point to pick up at least some if not all the chickens each night after they go to roost even if its just for a 3 second weight check.

Had to post tonight, Maude has been out in the duck pen the past two days, (inside at night). Today, oh so excited!!!

around 4pm her crop was not mushy, was down to a normal size. Belly feels SO much better and tumor is feeling like a dried lump of clay, pliable but not as big. augh!!! Can I scream yet to vet stress?! The day warmed to the high 50's so I grabbed the bedding pitch fork to turn the mulch pile and look for grubs. Maude ate 4

. I have not been able to reason with her that trying to hiss and growl at Sootie the Jersey Giant is NOT in her best interest...but a bedding fork makes for a good block between two females with no good sense..

Sorry I am just so relieved with her progress.

The past few days are looking good!! Maude is not eating as much as she should, but have been getting some normal, but smaller than usual poos. I am sure her innards have some slow recovery from the trauma the tumor has reeked on it. She usually get half a crop full each day, but not watery, thank G.The weather being warmer has allowed me to keep her in the ducks pen during the day, and she is quite content with that. She gets to visit with all the other chickens but with a barrier (the pen or me). Her weight is still a big concern and have been offering different things along with regular feed. Tonight she was happy with some cooked brown rice treats. Plan on cream of wheat (cooked) in the a.m. and see if she goes for that. I think tomorrow a small dose of kickin' Chicken omega 3. Her attitude is back and being bossy . Her belly feels well hydrated and squishy but you can still feel the hard spot where the tumor is/use to be really big. I think we may have a good chance. Good skin color, good sheen, no feather shed, tail up, head up and ATTITUDE to anyone who she can dish it out to..

Just have to keep her away from Sootie the JG. Guess Maude was a coop queen and now Sootie is moving in on the position.
Only downside is if all goes well the next month she will be heading for the kitchen door instead of the coop door come dusk

Who said being a chicken mom was easy!? I think after this drama more than my roots need to be touched up.

Absolutely great to hear
I can see her with her eyebrows slanted looking at the others
I am really glad everything is going well with Maude and she is positively lucky to have you
Like everyone it does take awhile to recover as long as her personality is normal
the body will catch up later
best of luck MAUDE:D

Very glad to hear she is still doing well.

I love the fence dance that they do:
Look how high I can hold my head
Yeah, well I can hold my head that high and stick my hackles out
Well I can stick my hackles out and stomp my feet
I can bob my head, stomp my feet and have my hackles out
