WATERY POOP

Since I stopped the Activia the poop isn't as runny as the picture. I read on BYC to give them yogurt with probotics so that's what I did. I suspect that caused it to get worse. It still isn't right though. It's tough being a new mamma, trying to do the right thing and making the situation worse. Thanks for your advice.

I would definitely try some powdered probiotic's for birds that you mix in their water as mentioned before. If the yogurt you were feeding them was not plain yogurt, you mentioned it had fruit in it, it probably also has sugar in it, some have quite a bit. That can increase the runny poop. I don't use yogurt at all, plain or otherwise.

I don't think it made it worse, but when trying to rule out problems with poop, I have found it best to feed nothing but fresh crumbles.

FWIW, if one of my hens poop looked like that, I would de-worm aggressively with Safeguard at 0.23ml per pound orally for five consecutive days. That dose will treat most worms, whereas the one day dose does not. Any chance you could take a poop sample to a vet? That would be best... they could check it for parasites, coccidiosis, bacteria and yeast for about $50. Add $45 to $65 if they insist on seeing her.

Just talked to my vet. He said there are only 5 or 6 cocci on the slide which he didn't think was too high. The gram stain was 50% - 50%. He isn't sure what the percentage should be for poultry. I tried to find information on the internet but didn't come up with anything. Does anyone know what gram stain percentage is normal? They have had the first dose of dewormer and are on day 3 of Corid. Also, how long does it normally take to know if these medications are working?

@KsKingBee might know, he's been getting lots of fecals done. His latest came back with zero coccidia. Hopefully he'll come here and post.

We finished the 5 day treatment of Corid Saturday. Sunday and Monday poops were almost normal but today we're back to very runny to slightly runny but much, much better than the picture above. They will get the second dose of Safe-guard this Thursday. Still only three of the seven are affected. All are still looking and acting normal - eating, drinking, lots of energy, bright eyes, good color. I just talked to my vet. He advised another five days of Corid but he's just guessing based on Sunday and Monday's poop. Somehow I missed seeing Kathy's advice to give them Safe-guard every day. My vet found no parasites. Should I try the daily Safe-guard? If so, for how long? What about antibiotics? We don't know what we are dealing with. I need help!

As for probiotics and vitamins. Our feed stores do not have vitamins for poultry so sold me a 3-pack of electrolyte and a 3-pack of probiotics "sav-A-chick" brand - to be added to their water.Should I order vitamins from the internet or will the electrolyte be as good as vitamins. When should I start giving these to them and for how long?

This doesn't make sense to me because, other than seeing the poop, you wouldn't know anything was wrong.

Well, we're still having problems. All my chicks have had their second dose of Safe-guard. All have had five days of 2 tsp Corid which seemed to do a lot to clear the problem. After two days off the Corid runny poops started again so I started them on a seven day dose of 2 tsp in their water; then 1/2 tsp Corid - they are now on day five of the seven. I am meticulous about sanitation, they have fresh Corid water daily and are on layer feed. I have given them some scratch and meal worms before bedtime. I let them free range afternoons on the several nice days we've had recently but no additional water was available to them - supervised, of course, since there is little sheltered protection this time of year. They will be six months old Dec 25th. All are still eating and drinking and have lots of energy. Labs last month showed no parasites and 5 or 6 cocci. The gram stain ratio was 50-50 but I still don't know what that number should be. Will start a separate post on the gram stain and hopefully someone will know what the ratio for poultry should be. This picture was taken one hour ago. Does anyone have any idea what might be going on and/or suggestions for what else I might try. I'll call my vet tomorrow but, since he's in the dark too, hope someone will post advice before I talk to him.
