I'm new here. :) We're currently looking for a home to buy and the first order of business will be adopting some chickies. I'm mostly here to find out about different areas we're looking in (to find out their rules about backyard flocks - I know some areas around here don't allow them, which won't do at all!) and then for the wealth of information that I'm sure you all can provide me with regards to setting up their house and specific info on breeds, etc.

Have a great Sunday!

Hello Sue and welcome to BYC!

First you will want to call your local town hall and they can tell you all you need to know about whether or not you can keep them and how many. You can also stop by our Local Chicken Laws And How To Change Them section to see if you county is talked about here....

Then you will want to stop by our learning center here on BYC for lots of good reads on all the aspects of keeping your flock from building the coop, raising the babies, feeding adult birds and keeping them happy, healthy and safe from predators...

Great to have you aboard and I hope you can get some chickens soon!!

I am partial to the Orpington breeds. Really friendly, docile fun birds to keep. Great layers too.

Most any Realtor should be able to help you find the right spot
for chickens or other animals as their job is not just selling

Orpington's are my first choice actually. :) I'd like some Olive Eggers too.

HAHA - our realtor isn't much for being helpful. I'm considering a switch in that department currently because I work long hours and often don't have time to sit and look for listings on my own. This is a whole 'nother topic though. ;-)

Thank you both! xoxo

Quote: Well then you might want to get another Realtor how is interested in your needs as they do work on commission and not by the hour so in all my real-estate endeavors I make them work for the money as this is the only thing they do and should know how to do it, little things like schools and parks how far it is to stores or as easy as a free way on ramp all of these are questions I ask and demand for who wants to drive through a city to get home after a long drive .....
