Waving hello from Park, Kansas

Hi, Larry & Ellie, Park, Kansas. Ten neighbors presented a petition to the city to ask permission to have chickens and rabbits for eggs and meat. The city ordinance here in Park states no farm animals within city limits. Larry has some experience with raising chickens as he grew up on a farm but I have none as a prior city gal. We have twenty 3 week old mixed breed chicks in Larry's kitchen. We are hoping for an affirmative answer next week, if not we will look for land outside city limits and keep our roosters..... It has been an exciting experience watching them hatch out and grow. They are such busy, curious little creatures. So much individual personality to watch.

Park is a major metropolis of 113 residents. We are both retired as is much of the community in Park. The pet is my 3 pound chihuahua Winnie who recently had cataract surgery after suddenly going totally blind in November. A GoFundMe thankfully paid for the surgery. She is once again a happy sighted pup. We get lots of oxytocin from her lovely gazes. She is a love. I make sure she gets lots of Larry time as he is quite fond of her.

I've been researching, researching, researching raising chickens for the past three months. Not sure how I arrived at your site but glad I did. Info is great. Looking forward to sharing our experience.
Hello and welcome here Miss Ellie and Larry. I'm your retired neighbor up north in SW Neb. I too love in a booming metropolis of pop. 695.! I'm always amazed that these small villages have these rules. We lived in Denver and THEY even allow chickens!!! I do hope it passes in your town. Be the squeaky wheel. ! :celebrate :woot:plbb. In this day a of govt overreach its bizarre how they restrict the very thing they encouraged in WW11!? Victory gardens and owning chickens was what encouraged back then. My Mom had both when I was little growing up in Denver. It's beyond me how they can deny you growing your own food supply, by having eggs and meat rabbits. ( I'm rambling sorry:he)
I'm so glad your little dog is well.
1. I can tell your chickens will be pets not livestock! ( don't they know how crazy us chicken people are? )
2. They ( chickens) are goofballs with varying personalities. So how can we not name them!. ( reaffirming the pet thing)
3. Having hens is really no different than having a garden. It's just a source of food supply you control. !
I was told our town doesn't allow chickens either then low and behold the neighbor puts up a coop and pen right out in open!?! So of course I jumped on my chance to be that retired lady with a backyard flock 3 years ago. I love this forum so many helpful folks here. I hope and pray ordinance is dropped. Keep us informed and send pictures please .... WE ARE SUCKERS FOR PIX! Glad you joined.

Welcome to the coop! I use the Forums and Articles tabs at the top of the page to do research. You can get lost for hours. It's nice to know you are minutes away from getting help with questions and emergencies! I always check in the "What's New" section as well at the top of this page. This way I can read how I may have a similar question or help give some advice.
