Ways to get temperatures to stabilize?

I bet it does kind of work like the water bottles. But, I would think they might start to rot if nothing was growing in them

Maybe! From what I've heard eggs can last way longer than I thought they could in normal temps.

maybe....If I were to try this I'd switch them out after about 10 days with new eggs. You wouldn't want one exploding or something. I went to the farmers market and bought fertile eggs for $2 a dozen and set those with my BCM's. (I just asked egg sellers if they had a roo in with their hens till I got a yes) I plan on giving them to a neighbor who's flock is aging.

That's a sweet thing to do.

Side question... Today's day 3 for some silkies, should I candle them to see if they're developing? If I should, should I also candle the wyandotte and leghorn eggs that are in there as well?

Also, what should it smell like? Right now, my incubator smells what (I supposed would be) a very farm-y smell. I kind of like it, but I'm not sure how the start of a bad eggs would smell.

If you have kids, this description will speak to you.

A rotten egg smells like the toilet when your kid does his duty just before leaving town for the week...and he fails to flush. We call it "rotty potty" at our house. It is not a subtle smell...it reaches out and smacks you before you get real close. Your nose will know.
