We are new owners of peacocks

Though this is my pair when they were around a year and 4 months but Indian Blue peachicks will look like this by the time they are anywhere from 6-9 months old.

Thank you all for you input I have learned a lot from you. And I am very appreciative for everything. We originally started out with 3 peafowl but unfortunaly lost one to what we think was a sinus infection, its poor little face was so swollen and thick green stuff coming out of its nostrils. I tried hot packs and some ointment for its eyes but to no avail. But it was so sweet the short time we had it, when I was doing the hot packs it would stick it's little face in my hands and just lay it there wanting more it broke my heart

when it died. After seeing the conditions from which they came I am very surprised that the others are healthy. They love bananas I hope that that's okay to feed them?

Sorry for your loss... I don't wan to scare you, but now might be a good time to stock up on medications and supplies that might be helpful in treating sick peafowl. I would recommend:

  • Safeguard for worms
  • Metronidazole for blackhead (Fish-Zole 250mg tablets)
  • 10% Baytril for bacterial infections
  • Corid for coccidiosis
  • Tylan 50 for bacterial respiratory infections

I'm also a big fan of weighing and tube feeding so I'd also suggest that you have what you need just in case - Scale, 18 french catheter tube and 35ml or 60ml catheter tip syringes.

Awww. I'm sorry that little peafowl had to suffer like that.

I think it's so sweet that it trusted you to keep it safe even though it didn't know you for very long. Care for the other two, as it seems to me they are doing much better. Give them lots of LOVE!

I think it's ok that you feed them bananas. Glad there's something they love eating!

It's perfectly healthy for them to eat bananas. They must have a protein source that is 20% or higher. If it's lower at this age of development it can cause problems. I've got 2 peachicks that are 5 months old and I feed them Medicated Game Bird Feed. I don't have a picture of it but I will get one. They are crumbles not pellets so it's easier on young chicks so they don't choke and it's medicated so it helps fight diseases and it's high source of protein. If you have a dog or a cat, most likely when those 2 are older they will get into the kennels and eat some of it. It won't hurt them they are just looking for a high source in protein because most dog food is 24% protein and cat is like 28-32% protein.

I just use medicated game bird feed and it works perfectly for my peafowl. I lost a quite a few of peachicks because I didn't have the right food so there was a lack of nutrition. Now that I've corrected that mistake haven't had any of my birds die because of nutrition nor disease.

All I was saying is that most medicated feeds have just amprolium in them and that will help prevent coccidiosis, that's it. Some medicated feeds also have bacitracin, that will help prevent necrotic enteritis, but neither of those will help prevent blackhead or respiratory infections.

Cool good info thank you. In rescuing our beautiful baby peafowl I was able to rescue 8 baby muscany? ducks, a frizzle hen and a rooster (not sure of the type) but he's kinda fussy too

sorry I didn't get a pic of him (I don't know why) too add to my flock of 13 chickens
and 1 ruan duck who thinks he's a chicken lol
even though we have the new ducks he will flock with the chickens. We have a nice hen house with enclosure but we also have rigged up an automatic door which opens in the morning so they can free range during the day and all of our chickens, ducks and yes even the pea fowl will be in before it closes at night. We feed all of them egg makers feed(which is crumbled) and I'll throw out some scratch when their free ranging.
