We did it... Jake Went to Freezer Camp! First One for Us

Nope, I've never eaten any of my birds. Every extra rooster has always been sold. Now, that I think back, that big group of 12 Barred Rock cockerels I had such a hard time selling till they were 13 weeks old went to a guy I know had most of them for dinner. He got a deal since I was desperate to be rid of that group by that age (cant keep feeding them all), but if we had just fattened them up a bit, we could have benefited more than the pittance we got for them. But, they were all sweethearts and very friendly. It would have been harder than it was today, by far.

Congrats, speckledhen! Some roosters make it quite easy... and quite the relief when they're gone.

When "we" did our first roo, I couldn't even watch, stood with my back turned, and he had just flogged me! HA! The first time is the hardest!

Did you skin him or pluck him? And what are you planning to make out of him? Fresh chicken, mmmm good!

I haven't done that so far but I did rehome 10 cockerals last night to someone I met in TSC.He is going to let them freerange on several acres so they will have a great life.He want's some more but I haven't made up my mind on a couple of them.He offered me $25 for my Mottled Houdan roo who is cross beaked but get along fine.I just couldn't part with "Edward Scissor beak" lol

We plucked the breast and leg areas a bit to see the musculature underneath, then skinned the parts we wanted. Chicken Stew a la Jake is simmering on the stove right now.

My DH calls it "Camp Kenmore". When someone asks what happened to a particular bird, I just say its head fell off. Let us know how Jake was...
