We did it

"Spoiled in life, respected in death" - wonderful!

We just finished the last of ours, and know exactly what you mean and feel the same way. I held each rooster's head while he bled out... seemed to help keep them calm (and less messy). Once I got the hang of hitting that artery they didn't seem to suffer much.

Sure makes you respect your food, doesn't it?

Good luck! I went through ups and downs the whole time of it being hard and then nothing more then preparing food. I'm very excited about dinner tonight!!

I have a 5 month old RIR roo and he will be the first culled.... He is very very large! Should we wait one more month?
My husband will be doing the culling... he did some research about the cone should he just cut his head off? Gosh that
sounds so awful...
Thank you for any advise

IDK about waiting, mine were still pretty young, I didn't want them to start crowing since we live in a neighborhood. Right about 18 weeks, I think.

We did the cone and slit the neck then cut the head off after it bled out. I made dh do all of that.

We just did our first and wish we would have just bled them instead of the head chop the flapping was horrific i know they were dead but ugggg it was nasty, and i got a face full of blood!!next time id use a cone and bleed them holding the head untill they were dead so less mess!! good luck oh and it is very worth it, mmmm best soup i ever had!!

I wouldn't just slit the throat, its a slower death and I cant stand the feeling of having your throat slit open live

I just chop the head, its a quick and painless death.

I use a slipknot and hang them upside down, then cut the jugular swiftly. At first we severed their heads with an ax, causing bruising and it seemed, more trauma to the bird. I may try a cone this time. Keep your good attitude, and remember that they lived a better life than if in a factory farm.
