When I used to order package bees through the mail, the post office would call and tell me to pick up. It was often pretty early in the day. One time they called at 5:30 in the morning, which was fine with me -- I got dressed, took the 5 minute ride to the PO, and had the bees installed in the hive by 6:15.

My chicks I ordered last year came into the post office in the city where I work (I actually called them to warn them they were coming.) My chicks I just ordered were sent to the annex part of USPS in the city where I actually live. So next year I am going to have to call both post offices just to make sure the little guys don't get missed!

Thank goodness both post offices and cities aren't that big and both only 15 minutes from my house just in opposite directions!!

Oh and on a side note.. I didn't know you could ship bees!!! Isn't that dangerous what if one of the USPS people are allergic???

The postmaster called the recipient, but the customer was elderly and couldn't drive. Our PM said it isn't a problem since we deliver, no charge for the special trip.

I drove the package out as quickly as I could, because I'm allergic to bee stings. The owner gave me a fascinating lesson on bee keeping and honey production.

Our post office here doesn't have a lot of consistency anymore in how they handle chicks. They also seem very suspicious of us when we call for information. After we moved to our new house, we couldn't get them to even tell us the route the birds take once they get into town (so that we could pick them up the night they arrive). The guy finally told me it was because of security precautions, post 9/11, which I can understand.

Anyway, sometimes they call us now when they arrive. One night they had us come to the airport as soon as the birds arrived. A few times they haven't called at all, just shown up at our door. A couple of other times, they have called and we have picked them up at the neighborhood post office. One time they even called and I told them I would come pick them up and the guy was at our door with the birds as I was leaving to get in the car! I think how they handle the birds just depends entirely on who is working and sees the package. Overall though, we still have had great luck with them, no real problems to speak of.

Good thing they don't ship UPS. UPS just LEFT a BOX OF LIVE CRICKETS (3000) on my doorstep in 90+ degree weather (about 2wks ago). WOW!!!! Funny thing, I happened to see 2 UPS trucks outside of Subway last night as I was pulling in the shopping center. Well, I live in a VERY small town, so I figured, this has GOT to be my UPS guy. So, me being me, jumped out and introduced myself. I asked them if they EVER called anyone when delivering - he said NO. Somehow, I find that hard to believe, but whatever.

I guess what really irritated me was my hubby was home when he delievered the crickets, but he wasn't aware there had been a delivery (not even a knock on the door). The UPS man just left them beside the door and hubby didn't see them when he left (had just come home for a few minutes to get something).

Good news: I did inform the UPS guy to expect another delivery of crickets, I had ordered 10,000 this time. Should have them in a few days.
