My husband and I have been married 15 years. 2 years later Pip joined us. She has been like our daughter. Australian Cattle Dog Mix. Got along with dogs, cats, kids. She was a huge part of our lives. She passed early this morning here at home where she knew she was loved. We knew her time was at hand and decided her psyche and emotional comfort was just as important as physical comfort. We didn’t want her final moments to be in an environment that frightened her to the point she would shake. Although discomfort is inevitable last night her physical discomfort became an issue. We knew we needed to take the big step. God took it out of our hands. She passed probably just before we woke up this morning. I knew she was still with us at 5am. Our hearts are shattered even though we knew it was coming.

One picture she is kissing my son in law when he scolded her for sitting on the picnic table.

you see she was missing one eye due to surgical removal for several glaucoma. This earned her the nickname Pipeye.

So sorry for your loss :( at least she passed peacefully.

Deep sympathy to you -- I've gone through this kind of loss repeatedly and it is never easy, nor does it get any easier with time or repetition. It's always a mercy and a relief when they go easily on their own timing -- count yourself lucky that Pip did this! We have lost four of our last remaining seniors in the last three weeks; two went out on their own and two had to be put out of their increasing misery. Ages 12 1/2 to 14 3/4 -- and I have a 15 1/2 y.o. female Darka, a dear buddy, still carrying on, putting up with the discomfort of a cancerous eyelid. Darks is long-coated and has not really shed out yet this summer. I dread July and August; the hottest days claim quite a few of the oldest dogs. Anyway -- sounds like you did everything right for Pip. I applaud your attitude that the dog's emotional wellbeing is paramount; too many people take the easy way out. Run free, Pip, and wait for your people beside the Rainbow Bridge.
