We lost the right to have chickens because of our cranky neighbors...

So about 11 weeks ago we were given 2 week old chicks by a family friend. We had a total of 6 chicks, and watched them grow up, and free range in our back yard. About a week ago by accident, one of the chickens went into our neighbors back yard, we got it back immediatley, he went through a hole we missed, but these old neighbors caught light that we had chickens. Dont wanna be that person, but we arent rude neighbors or anything. Every holiday we give out food to the neighbors, during blizzards we help shovel their lawn. But they dont like us.

So 2 days later when we leave for vacation, the care taker of our chickens send us a picture showing that we had received a town violation. Reason being we were keeping chickens! Our town usually turns a blind eye to people who keep chickens as long as they are properly kept and no one is complaining, but these neighbors complained to the town! And the worst part is, that they were suppoused to move in about 3 days!

We have concluded that it will be impossible to keep the chickens with us now and it's quite upsetting. Well there's my rant >_<

I’m sorry you are going through this. Unfortunately, if you are not permitted to keep chickens in your location there’s not much you can do.
Where I live you are allowed to keep chickens as long as it's in a closed enviorment and they cannot escape. Another rule was that the area cannot be within 100 feet of another dwelling. We fall short at 88ft. Normally the town doesnt check this, I know because of other friends that keep chickens in there back yard... some places are smaller then mines.

I'm sorry this has happened, can you move the chickens to a new location until the neighbors move and then bring them back?
As of right now, there's really nothing we can do. The town has said that since it's a violation of the code, we have to get rid of them no matter what, then report to them.

So you are not permitted because you are less than 100 feet from another dwelling. Whether or not other people who break the rules get away with it, doesn't change the rules unfortunately. I'm sorry your lot is such that you are not permitted chickens. Perhaps you can somehow appeal for an exception.

That's true, I've been doing some research of late, and noticed this ahs been a reoccurring issue through out the town because many residents have been keeping chickens for years, but because of mal intent have been reported to the town, and have received the same violation. Since it's somewhat of a condensed area, almost no one has that amount of backyard space. I'm going to try to email the town supervisor, since this issue has apparently gotten really common.
