We put a metal roof on the coop, and then HEARD the rain!!!

I wouldnt worry about it. You could just get some of the foam insulation thats made to attach to the underside of the stuff. its cheap.

But I really doubt your birds care a drop about it.

2 of my coops have tin roofs. I've been out in them while it was raining, both drizzles and downpours. The chickens acted completely normal. And when I watch them from the windows, the act normal... so I wouldn't guess the sound bothers them one bit!

Okay, good. Plenty of people have said the same thing I would have - dont worry about it.

Seriously, chickens aren't people and they wont dislike you for giving them a noisy roof. Do make sure their coop is tight and draft free, with plenty of air movement ventilation.

But the roof? As long as it is water tight over their heads, yuo've done your job.

I was about to drop off to sleep when I originally posted...to clarify: I actually enjoy the sound of rain on a metal roof, we had a trailer when we camped as kids, and the sound on the insulated roof lulled me to sleep many a night. What I notice with ours on the coop is that it is not insulated and is *unusually* loud and sounds more like small hailstones hitting the metal. That sound to me wasn't so pleasant.

Beekissed, I don't appreciate or welcome your condescension.

Reinbeau, this is how I imagined it, too, that insulating would shift the sound to something more tolerable and even relaxing...

To others who have this roof...thanks for the experience shared. My DH plans to work with it this weekend, as I'm not the builder I can't explain exactly what he's going to do, but he has a plan.

Our barn has a tin roof and there is no better place to be than there during a rain storm. I could just curl up on a bale of hay and go to sleep (except the hay is just too itchy!)

Autumn, it wasn't meant as condescension, but merely my quirky sense of humor.....but you may take it any way you wish! I have found that some people don't appreciate humor and I apologize if you are one who does not!

I understand your concern about the sound...a small sprinkle sounds like a hail storm in my metal garage! Our coop has a tin roof, but it's on top of 2 sheets of OSB/plywood, so it's somewhat insulated. We did it that way because of the heat here in Texas, but it helps with the rain noise too. I especially worried about the 100+ degree sun heating up that tin and turning our coop into an oven...yikes.

Oh, and by the way...I think Beekissed was just being funny and giving you another way of looking at the situation. I don't think she meant to offend you. Just my opinion.
