We put a metal roof on the coop, and then HEARD the rain!!!

A metal roof here would never work. Without insulation we would have baked chicken.

So I went to the hardware store to pick up paint, and the guy behind the counter insisted my chickens will kill themselves if it hails or we have a severe thunderstorm. I told him I researched metal roofs on the BYC forum before we installed it & the general consensus seemed fine with it. He told me I would be sorry. I tend to believe you chicken experts over a hardware salesperson, but he was so sure of himself. Has anyone's chickens committed suicide over a hailstorm?

I can honestly say that I've never heard of anything such as this and generations of my family have kept chickens under tin roofs. The salesman has been misinformed or just likes scaring newbies.

I would have had quite a chuckle over it and asked him how they did the deed.....hanging, overdose, or shot themselves!

A sense of humour is a good thing, I'm sensitive sometimes, I grew up with not-always-friendly sarcasm, often aimed my way.

I do tend to see my chickens as more pet-like, I think simply because that's been the realm of my current and prior experience with animals. I am open-minded though,

It sounds like maybe we'll insulate the metal with something, and probably more for my sanity than for the chooks' sanity, lol!!!

The metal DH picked up is realllly thin, so it does make the rain louder...

I had the same thought on mine- it was so loud. So I attached 3 - 20$ yoga mats to the top and it seems to work really well at making it less noisy. I love my chickens so much I know that seems silly but if they don’t sleep good I notice lower egg production. I’m in the North East Ny - I think they like it better.

You could probably get that stuff they spray in truck beds sprayed on the roof to deaden the noise. But it would be $$ and not sure you want black if you are in a hot climate and the rood gets sun. . But it would be a durable finish for sure.
