webbysmeme -- I think that @bobhoke meant that while we may have ended up like we are of our own accord, we can also choose to change ourselves however and whenever we please.
Unlike in a Gulag, where you basically did as your were told or got killed, as far as I can tell.
So, basically, you're choosing to change your lifestyle of your own free will -- no one is telling you what to do (aside from all these encouraging posts telling you not to give up!), and no one can tell you what to do.
