Some time ago my dad and I built a aviary outside for some birds. I got 4 budgies from a friend and everything was off to great start. Then we had a rat problem and 2 of the budgies disappeared and one got attacked by a rat and died an hour later. Then one was all alone so we bought another one to keep it company. We live at the coast and the mesh we used for the aviary started rusting. The last remaining budgie which I got from my friend chewed a HOLE through the mesh and also disappeared. We again had only one budgie. So we went back to the pet shop and bought a grey/blue young budgie who became incredible friends with our other budgie. Yesterday this young, beautiful grey/blue budgie was lethargic, puffed up and breathed heavily. Instead of sleeping on its little wooden hanging ladder next to the other budgie it slept on the ground next to our quail. It squeezed in between the quail to keep warm. Today when I woke up it was still on the ground so I put up our heat lamp above it and it seemed content. It ate some food and moved around in the afternoon but had balance problems. It would hop around and fall to the front and sides as if drunk. About an hour ago it was dead. What could be the cause? My other budgie seems very healthy but is now lonely again. This is the first time a budgie of mine has died without any noticeable cause. It was always the rats or just a escape from the aviary. I read on google that it might have been a stroke. I feed them budgie seed with some corn once in a while. Has anyone had this happen to their budgie before? I really want to know what the cause could have been!
