Weapon suggestion

Of course that is true, but we aren't discussing terminal ballistics.

This is about the best gun/cartridge for a beginning shooter with arthritis

Anything larger than a 22 LR is overkill for this scenario

55 years ago stuff was made in America with pride now its made in China/Japan

A well placed 22 LR will drop a deer without any trouble, the gun is easy to handle has no kick, and is tack driving accurate.

A Marlin Glennfield 60 semiautomatic can get the job done, it was inexpensive and holds enough firepower to drop a bear.

Next up would be a 22 magnum.

ETA: Just what do you folks think used to be used by the night hunting deer jacker was, a cannon.

Wow!

This is out of control.

.22LR! Nuff said!

I have fired without exageration 1000s of 22 LR rounds through a Springfield J Stevens model 87A auto loader. The gun has been in my possession for 43 years, and it was an old hand me down when I got it. Federal, SuperX, Remington, whatever I had went through that gun, even a rat shot load once in a while. Dump a shot of WD-40 down the barrel every now an then. Ain't ruined the barrel yet.

.17cal? Not for me. Ammo to expensive. In my opinion it's going the way of the 16ga shot gun. Reminds me of that 177 cal antique Benjamin pump pellet rifle. That's about the only 17 cal I care for.

243 initial cost of ammo and gun way up there. If I was going with a HP rifle I'd go with a 30 cal weapon, 30-30 marlin, 30-06, but I digress. No use in the case to proceed past a 22 cal rifle.

In the context of this discussion what does "Made In China" have to do with it?

I'll have to look but the last 22 ammo I bought was still made in USA. Bought an El Cheapo Tasco scope for a 30-30 marlin 336 this morning, made in China. Been shooting that 30-30 over open sights for 35 years. Bi-focals have screwed that up.

Only if it is fired at 45 degrees elevation. Other then that it will not. It does tends to bouce around due to its lack of penetration into hard stuff, packed earth etc. But not a bunch more then any round.
As always, know what is behind your target.

That's poor maintenance and operator error.
My 22's don't jam, and the bullets don't "do bad things to the gun"

Tested and proven a 17HMR is better than a 22LR

It won't kill them any deader than a 22, and it still costs FAR more to shoot.

Maintenance of the gun ...is a real biggie.....keep guns well cleaned and oiled........will stop just about all jams....unless gun has alot of wear.

22LR or 22 mag. hard to beat for a beginner......

Now if the OP doesn't have much room behind the area they are shooting......shotgun would be safer.

I worry where the .22s go on the bounce... I'd sure want to know there's way more room than I could possibly need, or pick a shotgun.

Seriously good advice!
I've been shooting most of my life. I have a handgun for my purse, shot excellent in the Air Force and Army. Also used to bowhunt. Then, used a cross bow when I became disabled. Really great advice.
If you can find an instructor good with women that is even better. Some are not so great.

The best weapon for defense is the one that is available at the moment. That being said the best beginners rifle is a .22lr , and shotgun the.410. Then one can move up to .22 magnum and 20ga.. All people are different. Some are 4' 11" and 92 pounds while others like me are 6'0" and 241 pounds. Every shooter should get a weapon that fits them and they are comfortable with. Also practice, that can not be said enough. To many shots are missed because of lack of practice! And don't buy the cheap junky ammo, get the good stuff it'll save you a lot of headaches and possibly a heartache or two. Sorry for giving a lecture but the shooting instructor/coach in me just came out. Oh and get a good, preferably certified, instructor to teach you if you're a beginner or novice. And remember, practice!
