Thyroid Power: 10 Steps to Total Health
Thyroid for Dummies

I cannot keep from gaining weight if I do not cut out refined starches and sugars. I eat a couple of eggs for breakfast with bacon. For lunch I might eat tuna or chicken salad on a large bed of raw spinach, . Dinner is 6 ounces of meat or fish, a large salad and steamed broccoli or spinach. Sometimes, I have an omelet with zucchini or spinach and swiss cheese for dinner. I do not drink diet or regular soda, nor do I eat bread, pasta, or sugary foods. I drink at least 8, 8 oz glasses of water a day. I use olive oil or butter for cooking and I also use coconut oil since essential fatty acids are required by our bodies for proper function.

I do drink a couple of large cups of coffee with 1/2 and 1/2 or cream and stevia in the mornings. I'm losing not only weight, but inches. I am no longer dead tired and best of all, the sugar/junk cravings are gone.

I'm reading the book, "Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes. He is a science writer and his book is technical, but his research is very, very extensive. His bibliography goes from page 515 to page 581! He looks at the history of the American diet and what has changed in the past few years that corresponds to the explosion of obesity in the population. He shows why the theory that eating less calories than are expended is flawed and he thoroughly examines the roll insulin plays in the metabolism of fat.

Some folks think Kevin Trudeau is a nutcase, but you ought to read Natural Cures "They" Dont Want You to Know About. Just the first few chapters are eyeopening, scary facts about the FDA approved food additives that are not required to be on any label, ones that are to make you more hungry, mess with your metabolism, get you hooked on certain chemicals, etc. It's certainly a great reason to avoid as many processed foods as possible, which most of us already know are bad for us, but the reasons they are bad will make you angry and uneasy. Sure makes me even more determined to grow my own. Just cleansing that gunk out of your body should help with the weight loss goals. I may take some of his solutions with a grain of salt (forgive the reference, LOL), but the information about the FDA and the FTC is alarming.

Shop the edges of the grocery store, the produce and the meats. Some of the ways they are grown may not be the best, but at least they are closer to healthy than the convenience aisles of boxed and canned foods.

We have gone down this lowfat/fat-free road for years and the country is far worse off, health-wise, than ever before. More gyms, more information, diet programs, etc, haven't done a thing to help us. It's so odd that some eat very little and do exercise yet gain and gain and the docs say their thyroid is normal and hand them diet sheets with food programs that are higher in calories than they were already eating. Something is terribly amiss there. Could be whatever is added to our food under the guise of "protecting" us. And aren't you sick of seeing corn in everything? High fructose corn syrup, corn this and corn that; and if it isn't corn, it's soy. And this country is fat, fat, fat compared to other countries who do not have that many convenience pre-packaged foods. Really makes you suspicious, doesn't it?

Best of luck to all of you. I've been 30 lb heavier and I've been 30 lbs lighter (briefly on the lighter side) and I know all too well what you're up against.

Not necessarily a diet book, but I was fascinated with The Omnivore’s Dilemma, by Michael Pollan. It's one of the reasons I have these fluffy 2-winged pets now.

The book gives an overview of the 4 paths from which the American diet stems.

Hmmm, maybe we need a book thread to go along with this one?

Good luck, I just joined a gym a little over a month ago, and about a month ago, I quit smoking and drinking sodas alltogether.

Try eating whole grains, some protien with your carbs, and up the water, it is so good for you. '

i've read about stuff like that in the past, and i don't trust processed, packaged foods because i have a very sensitive stomach when it comes to junk, and that stuff ALWAYS makes me feel ill, or weird. i don't feel that way when i prepare my own food, even if it's not necessarily "healthy" food i'm making. so i agree w/ you wholeheartedly! i make as much of my own stuff as possible and i am always checking labels when i do buy things.

and high fructose corn syrup is of the devil, i swear! there have been studies down in lab rats that show how 2 groups eating the same number of calories, except 1 group has hfcs instead of regular sugar, and that group became obese while the other group did not. i hate that stuff! i won't eat anything with hfcs in it! and i think that's exactly why america is having an obesity crisis---its in EVERYTHING premade.

Since I think we all want to be healthy where weight loss is a side effect I thought I'd share some of my thoughts this morning. This was a good little article I found and thought you'd like: http://technorati.com/lifestyle/green/article/effects-of-green-leafy-vegetables-and/#ixzz0xHdDMUu3

The
more fresh fruit and vegetables you eat that don't come in a box or a bag, the better off you are. We're basically a big tube; food goes in one end and comes out the other. How the food gets broken down into energy happens in the middle there. Food with preservatives in it (that keeps it from rotting so it can sit on a shelf longer and still be sold) does not break down into energy the same way as fresh food that is full of enzymes. Heat kills the enzymes, too. The trick is to get enough enzymes from your food so that your digestive system can go about producing the right kind of energy to repair and maintain your bones and tissues like you were designed to do.

Different kinds of digestive enzymes work on different foods. Fruits digest quickly. That is why they should be eaten by themselves. If they are eaten AFTER a meal, they tend to ferment and actually begin to rot in your system causing gas and other digestive issues. Protiens and starches require different gastric juices to digest and tend to sort of 'cancel each other out' when eaten together. Your body spends a tremendous amount of energy just trying to digest food if eaten this way. It leaves you sleepy and tired instead of energized. Just think Thanksgiving dinner; and you always thought it was the tryptophan in the turkey!

Basically, without going into cell biology, here's my condensed version of food combining:
Eat fruit alone and in the morning.
Protein & Vegetables = OK
Starches & Vegetables = OK
Protein & Starches + NO, NO, NO
Drink room temp. water or teas inbetween meals. (Water dilutes the digestive juices while you are eating, a little is ok)
That's it..

So, I'll be giving you some more of my philosophy on how the body processes what we put in it and on it later. Everybody eat and move healthy today....

not too much to add today, I wanted everyone to know, since I am the thread starter lol, that I have been reading what everyone has been saying, just haven't been responding. I have been getting a cold the last 4 days or so and am on the borderline between sinus infection and cold. The rest of the house is already sick so I am fighting an inevitably losing battle. I missed yoga today and the gym, I was exhausted and didn't sleep well last night, not to mention my phone rang off the hook this morning. I am headed to bed now and hope to sleep better tonight so I can make it to the gym tomorrow! Thanks for joining the thread guys and I wish you all luck on your own weightloss endeavors.

Peace, Love, and Health to all.

I'm walking this morning. We had a "cool" front so it is only 79 degrees. I hate August in Texas.

I also found out my scale was off, so I'm about five pounds heavier than I thought. UGH!
