I have three 11 month old Bielfelders. Happy girls! However the chicken who happens to be lowest on the pecking order has laid a weird egg situation. See picture.

She's always laid eggs in random spots. I'm not sure if that's just a personal preference thing for her? But her eggs are usually more thin walled and/or covered in a LOT of the white "bloom" stuff. (I believe thats whats its called..) I do supplement with oyster shells. That is available to them 24/7.

But today I saw she laid an egg in a weird spot again after they were doing their floppy time in the dirt. And it seems to have had a double yolk egg that was still forming stuck to it. I'm guessing it just got stuck and traveled out along with the fully formed egg?

I just worry if she has reproductive issues? Or if this behavior is because of the pecking order? She's the one who gets the most of my affection because the other two bully her so much. I just want the best for her!

These are my 1st chickens. Any insights or recommendations are appreciated.

Sometimes they just have hiccups in their systems! Mine have laid soft shelled, triple yolk, no shell, etc over the time I’ve had them! If her shells are consistently thin, it could be possible she’s not getting the access to the oyster shell she needs. If there’s only one dish of oyster shell available, you might try offering 2 or even 3 separate dishes of oyster shell that are on opposite ends of their enclosure, so she can always access it even if the dominant hens are around one of them. You can also supplement with Calcium Citrate+D3 tablets. She is on the youngish side, and they do tend to lay more “funky” eggs than more mature layers do as their systems adjust. If she seems otherwise healthy, I would try increasing her calcium intake and see how she fairs after that. I’m definitely not an expert, but that’s where I would start! Wait and see what some other more experienced chicken tenders have to say, too!

Thank you so much! That is a huge relief. Chickens are still new to me and I have yet to shake off the fear of something being devastatingly wrong every time something is weird. I'll be sure to up the calcium and get her those supplements.
