Anyone ever seen this? Looks like string glued to the outside. I can scrape it off and it's only on half the egg. Maybe bloom all bunched up?

Not really sure, I'll have to research it. I get eggs like that every once in a very great while. I thought it may be calcium, but not sure.

Was it still wet with bloom when you picked it up after she laid it and rubbed the substance off?
Was the substance dry and chalky, or soft and sticky when you rubbed it off?
I'm betting she had some urates on her butt fluff and they rubbed off on the egg as it emerged.
Yep, urates...get them quite often here....usually easily 'dry-wiped' off.@aart Haven't seen one like that from any of the girls that lay colored eggs. She layed the egg then fussed a bit. Moved it over to by the other egg in the box. (A BCM egg so clearly not hers) She sat on both for a min or two then left.
You could be right it's from her feathers. It was chalky when I scraped at it but didn't bother really messing with it. She is notorious for her slightly dirty butt. Not sick or caked and gross...just ever so slightly dirty. LOL

Here are some websites with weird and funky eggs. Everyone who raises chickens will encounter a weird egg at one time or another. Lately I have had one girl laying an egg with a membrane outside over the egg. I have had an egg inside an egg, fart eggs, lash egg and a few more odd ones over the years.
