Weirdest Things Your Chickens Have Done

Hello! I want to hear any funny stories anyone has about their chickens doing weird things. I will start first. My Cochin Bantam rooster, Slate (who you can see in this week's picture on the home page), food-clucks at things that are not even food. He will pick up dried leaves, poop, drops of water, dead grass, sticks, and more random things. He does not stop to get attention from the females, food-clucking non-stop for minutes. If he does not get attention, he will scream loudly, sometimes even multiple times.

Reminds me of the time one of my other roosters jumped backward because a butterfly scared him!

My cockerel thinks I am a hen. He is purring at me, dancing at me (in a friendly way), and trying to tell me to eat the food he finds.

My rooster doesn’t do this anymore, but when I first introduced him to the flock, he always did this silly little dance before he tried to mate the hens. He hardly ever got one then, because he spent so much time running in circles and flapping his wings.

That is called the wing-dance! They do it to impress the hens. The hens either run away or squat. The higher-ranking hens prefer to run as far away from the rooster as possible because submitting to mating makes them look weak.

Slate has a deformed leg but that does not stop him from dancing at every female he sees . . .

One of my black sexlink hens rolled over completely upside down and waved her legs in the air while dustbathing.
Also my old rooster went and sat for like ten minutes in a five gallon bucket that had fallen over.

That reminds me, one of my roosters named Phoenix (the one who got startled by the butterfly I was talking about) lays down by a bucket in the yard, stares at it and purrs at it. And he purrs at the bucket when he walks past it. I cannot begin to try to figure out what goes on in his brain.

I saw one of my lavender Araucana run full speed across the yard, jumping over the sunbaking dog on her way lol.
