Weirdo Orpington hen?

Some of my ordered variety pack from Meyers at 6 months (I ordered 8 females and got 8 females). Left to right, Easter Egger, (behind her the tail of the Egypt.Fay.), Black Austrolorp, Cockoo Marans, Buff Orp. - I know they aren't show quality, but I'm very pleased with them.

Never discount your hatchery gals! I have Meyer girls too as well as a few "breeder" birds too. Love all of them!

Your girls are very lovely! Does your BA complain all day like mine:)

If I can figure out how to pluck a few chest feathers from her (him?) I may send them down to the avian lab I use for sexing chicks. Just to know once and for all. With only having 4 definite laying hens, I would think having 2 cockerels would be a recipe for disaster by this age. There’s been not even a scuffle between any of them, so that’s why I’m hesitant to call Black Hood a male just yet. It’s too bad they don’t have a DNA test for breed, lol!

That's true. I'm just REALLY hoping to possibly keep one of my silver laced orpington cockerels along with my Ameraucana rooster, but if Black Hood is a rooster, that plan may not work out. But I've got some time since the silver laced orps are only 3 weeks old.

I was finally able to get some pictures of Black Hood next to a few of the other chickens just to compare size. She looks nothing like the other BBS Orpington that I received. So crazy!

Thats a typical orp body shape on right side of picture and she is very pretty. I love blues I have a silver laced blue myself. As for the mystery bird there, maybe a JG and they can take up to 10 months to lay, or as some others have speculated a possible cockerel

She sells hatching eggs and chicks and is also on FB
Also she is very meticulous about packing eggs for shipping so the don't get broke or scrambled. She posted how she packs eggs on her FB page
I also got a Rooster from her
Sam is a silver laced black and quite the gentleman, he is now 13 months old the picture was at 10 months or so

When I saw that first picture in post #34 ... I thought "Black Australop" ... I also don't think it really all that big ... just more "lanky" than the Orp next to it.

I wouldn't bother at this time to dna sex it ... spring has sprung in Florida ... in a month or two you should definitely have either an egg, or a crow ...
