Welcome to my pond - Swim, wade, or sit on the bank

Ok. Serious business here. I found a 1yr old lonely Cayuga drake abandoned at the humane society (freaking Pyxis!)

Question: Do I need to quarantine him 30days like a chicken???

So the good news here is that ducks don't carry nearly as many nasty diseases as chickens do - of the respiratory diseases, they carry only mycoplasma. They also can carry diseases that affect other ducks, but not so much chickens.

That said, quarantining is always best practice. I'd probably want to quarantine him for two weeks or so to be safe.

How quarantined do you think? Like, I can see you through the fence, but we're eating, sleeping, bathing in different places?

Well, the respiratory diseases can be passed through the air - if a sick bird sneezes and it floats over to the other pen, then the birds there could get sick. So for a true good quarantine, you'd want them in totally different areas. You also would only ever take care of the bird in quarantine last, bleach your shoes after you left their area, and not share feeders, waterers, food scoops, etc between the groups of birds.

That said, if this poor guy was abandoned alone at a humane society, surrounded by barking dogs, strange cats, all manner of odd animals, and no companions of his own, he's been under a lot of stress - and I would expect if he was sick, he would have already shown it by now in that environment. Do you know how long he's been there?

If he's alone there, he's effectively been in quarantine the entire time he's been there. If you ask them and they say he's shown no signs of illness, and he's been there awhile, he's probably fine.

He was brought in June 1st (not that long ago.) Apparently the farm animals are kept outside across the street, away from the dogs & cats.

A few pictures I just took.

The older 2 kids and Feta (not their mom, their mom is Mocha and off eating as fast as she can... couldn't bother with coming to say hello)

That's so awesome! Now he has a great home and girlfriend!! :clap:love
Their bubble butts are the cutest part! :love

Think of it this way, you're probably earning your Sainthood. I, on the other hand, will be sent to the warmer, southern regions for constantly telling her to stop being such a B---h. We have a complicated relationship.
I love those lil fluffy bubble butts! :lau
