One more trip around the sun completed and still vertical

Now that is what I call an intelligent quip.
For many it seems the sun rises................and mostly on them if they are to be believed.

Totally enjoyed it, very good read. I've been studying their vocals more in depth, this adds an entire new layer of their communication to think about. I love an inquiring mind. Thank you!

Chicken language has proven to be much more complicated to study than I initially thought. Part of the problem being they have accents while movements are pretty much the same for all.
Also, some chickens here make sounds others don't, or at least I've not heard them make them.
Currently in scientific studies 34 different sounds have been identified; I think I've got close to 50 now but some could just be different accents.

I can definitely tell the difference in many sounds they make. Especially the distress calls if a predator is near. And I’ve learned to watch their body language when they make the distress calls, depending how each group reacts, where they run to, or not, etc. It’s fascinating really. I’ve never tried to make notes of them, or figure out how many, but I agree it’s a lot!

Someone makes that Hawk sound and everyone heads for cover.... Usually a rooster doing flock duty.

Guinea pigs do the same... I used to put out white pipe the kind with holes in it in about three foot chunks Id go out and see a guinea pig butt on one end and a guinea pig head on the other.... Id pour em out and there would be about ten in there....

But for the chikens i use plywood and Straw bales... gives the goats something to playon and the chicken something to hide under and or nap under.... shade. Tripple duty fof hiding from hawks.

Now that reminds me that I'm a mite peckish. I may just have to nip down the track and see if the baker chaps have got anything tasty.

26o F this morning, really?!?!? Glad I covered the gardens last night. Oh well, we normally have at least one frost and or freeze this week most years. Mother Nature's idea of giving me a bday present I guess. Delaying our plans slightly as we have to uncover everything before we leave. Sweet DH is taking me on a little day trip and lunch for my bday.

I've got lots of recordings. Unfortunately I wasn't very disciplined when I archived them so for quite a few, I don't have a clue what was happening at the time of the recording..
However, many are similar enough to be able to classify.
One of the hardest to get was a mother hens instructions to her chicks in the event of perceived danger. When they are very young, mother calls the chicks to her. The problem with this is mother is then hampered in the event she needs to fight by a bundle of hysterical chicks underneath her. At around 4 or 5 days old mother starts sending them to cover and stands in the open ready to fight the danger. So, I manged to get the send away call and the hide under me call, but I still haven't properly identified the come out of cover call because it's often mixed in with I've found food calls.
I've tried a lab style experiment but the sounds aren't the same.

Bet the sun DOES shine on those people almost all of the bleeping time.

Here. . We get to see the sun as it skims the mountains and glaciers to the south.... the sun is always to the south


(Yeah, I know that isn't what you meant... but I WANT the sun to shine on me.... )
