Sometimes you can sweet talk a dog out of barking and they cool down. Or your assumptions are wrong.
One time I passed a house and a furious Chihuahua came shooting down their driveway to get me. I figured I couldn't use the "soccer ball" movement, his people might be watching. Oddly enough when the dog was within striking distance it started wagging it's tail. It turned out to be the sweetest little dog. He kept trying to follow me, and I was worried the owners would think I wanted to steal him.
The Chihuahuas our neighbor had were not. They had one very nasty one and of course would let it run free. Then they got a second smaller one and it was very sweet for awhile. It ended up as nasty as their original dog. Lady would stand outside watching it yapping and snapping around my heels and never call them off.
One day I saw an official state van come and take them away - van said "contagious diseases," on the side. Never got the story on that.
