Chickies!!!

Well... it is a bit late in the season... depending on when you get cold....

Nice about the blue Andalusian pullet!
Depends on what “cold” is. If I set her tomorrow, chicks would hatch Sept. 30, Oct. 1. It can sometime get below freezing by the end of the month but not usually for extended periods. November can have highs in the 40s and 50s, lows in the 20s sometimes. Or not. I’m thinking I’ll give her half a dozen eggs, candle them in a week, and see if they’re even developing. If not, I’ll break her. Her poor “ babies”. They haven’t figured out that she’s done with them, so they’re trying to be in the nest with her, or on top of the nest box! :lau

I found my missing chicken - followed my nose. :sick I didn’t study too closely because… eww. She was wedged under an old piece of machinery, head and neck gone, breast cavity looked hollow, breast skin flayed open. First thought was hawk, but the thing she was under was in the brush. Unless it first attacked in the open area where I first saw the feathers and then followed her into the brush. Anyway, the chickens will remain on lockdown for a few more days. I’ve seen quite a bit more hawk activity, so it could be they’re migrating already. I don’t know what else might have been able to come up on her in the open space and grab feathers without her noticing. Any ideas?
