Welcome to my pond - Swim, wade, or sit on the bank

Good morning pond. I had my 2 week post-op checkup this morning. The dr said that everything looks good and is healing well :) I'm still afraid to chew anything but that's just a mental thing. I haven't taken anything for pain all week and last weekend I was only taking a little over the counter stuff so I'm feeling good about all that.

We have the first snow storm of the season rolling in between today and Saturday. They're calling for around 6". I'm hoping that the roads are too warm for anything to stick to them yet, at least until tomorrow afternoon/ evening. My son didn't get snow tires for his civic yet and is driving up and down the mountain for work. I'm glad he got switched to day shift though so he and DH will both be heading down the mountain and back home within an hour or so of each other.

Sad!

Had it rotted, or some such?

When I lived in Texas... I had a huge water oak die... I had to get it taken out (power line ran right through it  ) Anyway... tree guy told me the water oaks don't live as long as some oaks... wasn't anything I could have done.

Those live oaks can live for a century... but only if their branches don't grow odd, and cause a spot that wants to rot out. And all the ball moss that always wants to get them... if it isn't one thing, it is another!

Will you plant a new tree in its place?
No, it wasn't rotted. It just wasn't very deeply rooted. A foot at most by about 6 foot across. A few small tap roots broke loose when it fell. There's a church below me that lost a lot of the metal on their roof at the same time so it was obviously a pretty strong gust of wind.

We lost a huge tree like that when I was a kid.

Healthy tree, and huge.... but for some reason it wasn't very deeply rooted.

We had a bunch of rain which softened up the soil and then strong wind.

And there it went!

We had a winter wonderland yesterday with the first snow of the year. We had 4-6" in our area. Both DH and DS made it home safe from work, up and over the mountain. Both of their cars are front wheel drive with no snow tires (prius and civic) so I was worried about them. There were quite a few accidents and lots of cars stuck apparently. I refused to go anywhere. DH made DD drive him down to town after he got home for some winter snow driving practice. She has her license but never really drove in the snow. They took an AWD and she did good :)
