I have Windows that we will hinge to fold down and wire mesh to install for screens when open. There will be tin on the wall on the inside of the house part as well with insulation between. .
After reading about frostbite now I wonder if we don't need to think about installing some vents around the top? I don't know why but I guess I didn't think ducks needed as much ventilation as chickens. What do you guys think?

Wow, very nice! This will be my 3rd winter with ducks. I've paid close attention and we've never had issues with frostbite. Venting, though, is essential. The roof on their coop is that corrugated, wavy looking metal and there's about a 4 inch spacer all around. Windows are about the same size as yours and they're never completely blocked. Max is about 3/4 and that's when temps are in the single digits.

look what our sweet SCG posted on the Old Folks thread...
yep
A supposedly scientific article going on about the shedding and regrowth of duck penisis.
so??? comments?

:th Ugh. Not again! :barnie

Still didn't say that they literally fall off. I think all these articles are unclear about that part. I don't doubt the size changes with competition. But I highly doubt that they fall off and regrow.

maybe too little.... definitely not too much.
Maybe we should cut out the spaces on the back truss as well and cover it with hardware cloth.
Now I'm wondering if that's why my eggs had trouble hatching . . maybe the humidity got too much in their box it rained a lot during the time she was sitting.

Well. . the plan was to make the Windows fold down instead of popping out cause it's a double pane glass. They were free. We thought if we made them pop out then they would be likely to get hit by falling branches or hail and break. So it will be an open or closed kind of thing. That might not be a good plan. Didn't think about it raining in or being able to only partially open them.. Hum. I better talk that one over with my contractor. Lol

I like big openings on one side only...then there is no blasting of air going through the coop.

As to the article. ..it said that the penisis were like antlers!!!!!!!!!

Nope, do that... run area will all be open, right? Just wire covered on the walls?

Do that, but add little awnings over the tops of the windows, problem solved... ;)

Anothet thought... the back truss, instead of opening it up fully, can you make it a vented section? Like angled slats so wind doesn't blow directly through?
