Thanks everyone for the hugs. Had to stop and have a smoke break before I face the kiddos at lunch. Not looking forward to it.

Toss very true..... And I wouldn't worry much about Frost bite where you live.... My ducks go out on below zero weather and they are fine.....I actually have to stop them from going out when it's too cold. But ducks are very hardy. You should be fine with extra ventilation.I think ducks need more... they produce more liquid. .. and they keep warm more easily.
I would keep about half of the wall opening up to the roofed run open for venting.
I sent that article to Rav....look what our sweet SCG posted on the Old Folks thread...
yep
A supposedly scientific article going on about the shedding and regrowth of duck penisis.
so??? comments?
Agree..... My shed had pretty good ventilation....... Just have to make sure predators can't get in.maybe too little.... definitely not too much.
No she just said Ruddy ducks that they wither (whatever that means) and regrow for mating season.Still didn't say that they literally fall off. I think all these articles are unclear about that part. I don't doubt the size changes with competition. But I highly doubt that they fall off and regrow.
Maybe we should cut out the spaces on the back truss as well and cover it with hardware cloth.
Now I'm wondering if that's why my eggs had trouble hatching . . maybe the humidity got too much in their box it rained a lot during the time she was sitting.
Ya. . I guess it did didn't it!I like big openings on one side only...then there is no blasting of air going through the coop.
As to the article. ..it said that the penisis were like antlers!!!!!!!!!
I'm afraid they would be too heavy to hang sideways. They were good Windows when new. . someone left them in the shed on the back lot we bought we found them recently.but then they need to be 100% end or closed. opening up would be better....right? or sideways.
Yep run will all be open. There will be a bit more tin added to the sides that will extend out into the run where the covered part is. Mostly just because tin was free. .fencing was not.Can I come live there???
Between you and Steven, flock the ducks, I am JEALOUS!!
I give up...
Nope, do that... run area will all be open, right? Just wire covered on the walls?
Do that, but add little awnings over the tops of the windows, problem solved...
Anothet thought... the back truss, instead of opening it up fully, can you make it a vented section? Like angled slats so wind doesn't blow directly through?
Are you starting to wish you had a dollar for every time you typed something similar to that? Those were 2 different articles, but similarly written... their langiage in describing the situation is very obscure and the antler comparison is completely obtuse...
Think of it this way, guys... cold makes shrinkage happen... seasons work same way with ducks... it can and does shrink down... and then, depending on necessity, it can expand to necessary lengths...
Never have I seen any actually 'fall off' and 'regrow'... their use of the word 'regenerate' is simply relative...
ETA: oh, and if you cut it off, it's gone... that part does not come back...
Do you let your ducks swim in winter?Toss very true..... And I wouldn't worry much about Frost bite where you live.... And I think that would be a cool idea to maybe just cut out part of the truss in back. .and cover it with the wire mesh. Husband is gonna kill me though for not telling him before he started putting the tin on. Whoops. Awnings would be great! Wonder if I can get him to do that Toolol I'll tell him ravyn said they needed it!
