Ok Avocado wood as a fire wood by a Chiminy sweep

I would not recommend Avocado as a firewood. On the surface it seems to have a good value, but it burns so quickly you will go through it much faster.
It glazes up the chimney flue quickly with a glazed creosote that is highly flammable and leads to needing harsher methods to sweep it out. Instead, consider pine, pinyon pine or a fruit wood as an alternative as a softer wood.
We’re a chimney sweep company in San Diego, CA and have to deal with Avocado wood all the time.

Oh well Eucalyptus it is... Love it

Don't mean to be argumentative, but I've never heard Pine classified as a hardwood, unless it was milled into lumber & bounced off my head. I've always been taught not to burn much of it, if any. All right in small quantities as starter wood 'cause it ignites easily in small pieces, but otherwise I'd stay away from it, unless you want chimney fires started by creosote buildup.
Well for a soft wood I have dealt with pine harder and denser than oak .So depending on which spieces of pine your talking about . All wood has a certian amount of natural resins.
@BYC910 you nailed it "Honest Al's quality used chickens". Eloquently stated.

I don't think that I updated here about 'Neighbor John' - he died at 7 PM that evening. He lived with dignity, and never had to give up his independence - something to be said for that.
Hope we can all pull that off .God rest his soul.
You really are a magician! :clap

I'm sorry about John. Sucks! :hugs

We aim for eucalyptus every time here. We never burn pine.
You have never been cold enough .Wood burners aren't really ment to burn slow .Smoldering wood wull not burn the resins in wood .A roaring fire will .Close down the damper and vents and creosot buildup begains.Green wood will burn ,but must be burned in high heat .The higher the flame the more gases being released from the wood to burn .I have burned truck loads of pine .Thing is when the wood stove is going it goes wide open .don't trust low buring wood stoves .If it burns it been burned here ..Not saying it is bad to have a slow burner .Just saying they create a more dangerous environment. And with the constant chimney cleaning they require are not for me .

We heat with a trash burner the stove is 125 years old burned every day of it's life
and still has a great fire box we had to rebuild the ash box bought sheet metal
made a new one same door on it

california is now requireing Catalytic converters on their Stoves. The only way I can get one of those two holers is buy it used or out of state and go and pick it up myself. Which I may do.
My neighbor has one that he slow cooks stews and beans on... I want that ability.

I maybe use a quarter or half a chord per year. Avocado wood is pretty much available all year round. So if its considered a fruiting tree then I can take advantage. On my property is Ribbon wood and While it technically isnt a tree the wood is very hard and can be polished to a high gloss.

There are 2 kinds of EPA certified stoves, one with a catalytic converter in it, and one that makes the smoke go back and forth to accomplish the same thing.

The one without the catalytic part in it but YES EPA approved is the way to go.

But, you need it with a baffle, so when you start up the fire you can bypass the back and forth smoke burner, and have the smoke go right up the chimney in a non-efficient way. That way you get everything nice and heated up.

Once all stove parts and chimney are hot, flip the baffle to "proper EPA aporoved" system.

That way you get little to no smoke in the house.

Trying to start a cold stove that has the baffle turned so the smoke HAS to go through the catalytic part, or all of those smoke burners will cause all of the smoke from the fire to enter your house instead of the chimney.

If the baffle doesn't work, you can get it going, without a wall of smoke, if you use a blow torch to heat up the stove and stove pipe and get the fire started that way.

Even an EPA approved stove can have a cooking surface on top.

Also, the EPA stoves have MUCH LONGER burn times!!!! So, they are better...

Let me find some links...

Is poor appetite one of "the" symptoms. I haven't been able to eat regular meals the past week or two. Don't feel hungry - maybe it's just my carpy cooking. Even my favorite foods- think I am hungry but, not and dump them out. If I do manage to eat some, end up vomiting. I know darn well I don't have morning sickness. Tho my mother and I always thought I would have twins 34 years ago. Maybe one is still "in there," and doctor didn't notice.

Well if I do have/get the virus, will try to keep information coming so folks know what to expect. Walmart wanted $ 18 and up for a plain thermometer.
They can keep 'em.

EPA page with info: it has nice diagrams of a catalytic and a non-catalytic stove.

If you have the catalytic type, if you burn trash or even green wood, it will gum up the catalytic box. To replace that sucker is over $300 last I checked. If it gets dirty and you don't replace it then it doesn't do much good. If you are good, never burn trash and only burn seasoned wood it should last you 10 years or some such.

And here is a great article explaining and comparing older, non-EPA approved wood stoves, to modern EPA non-catalytic.

I like this stove, looks like it is EPA approved (had to look on the EPA site to find it) and non-catalytic, and you can slide tiles in the side to help hold the heat. Not as snazzy as those soapstone models, but less money. Also, flat top to cook on. Photo then link:

Looking about... couldn't get really good info..

But at first look you can have an EPA approved non-catalytic stove in California, BUT looks like it HAS to be a pellet stove???
