Welcome to my pond - Swim, wade, or sit on the bank

Caught my first ever King Salmon yesterday; a Lake Michigan 7-8 pounder.
6 of us were on a charter trip. Mine was the first of the only two caught; other one was 24 pounds.
I had no idea those could be caught in the great lakes!

Wow!

Do they live their entire life in the lakes? Or they switch from the lakes to the rivers for their life cycle?

But then... no ocean water for them... wowsers.

It was probably a Coho Salmon. Coho were seeded into the Great Lakes around 40 years ago. Used to fish for them off the break walls of Lake Huron above Flint MI Absolutely gorgeous fish and can get really huge!

todays adventure...

went to go up to the house to tend the chickens opened the garage door and it was like sticking your head in the oven. NOT JOKING 115 Freaking Degrees. :th

Good thing was by the time we got on the freeway the temperature had dropped some. 112 degrees. Half way to the feed store the fuel light came on. I thought What Now What is next. Still 112 at the feed store. I wanted to talk to Rita the owner when we pulled in but she was headed off talking rapidly on her cell.

So we got a bag of feed and a bag of wild bird. And headed off to Jacumba... Home sweet desert Home. Did I say Desert... Yep I did. When we got there an hour later the temperature had dropped some again.110... Really? Ah but its a dry heat.

Son checked the house and I waited in the car. Then he took The three gallons up to the coop and the chickens were no where to be found. Till the rooster saw him and woke the girls up. They were hunkered down in a cool spot in the coop. All are hale and hearty.... YAY....

Have a pile of eggsies in a corner we cant get to. But we will deal with that later. They didnt need feed so we didnt bother to crack open the bag. I am going to portion it out in Ten pound packages and vacuume seal it. right now Ten pounds of crumble is lasting them about four weeks.

Ok home again. Temps were up on the freeway this time back to 115. We had a tail wind coming from the desert. Oh Joy .... perfect formula for fire.

Then I looked up in the distance and noticed a cloud kind of looked odd. Nope Not a cloud. Smoke. We looked it up and it said 20+ acres in Alpine. Which was a little more than half way home. I so hoped no houses were involved. Alpine got a big hit in 2003 Some of those homes were never rebuilt.

Got home and the temp was back to 115. There was NO breeze at all which made it stifling. So Son went out to fill the bird feeder and bird bath. and he puttered out there quite some time. He was just finishing up when the power went out... Really?.... Just Really? Oh yeah he got a notice of the rolling black out. Slated from 3 pm to 9 pm...
I heard the neighbors fire up their generator. There is only twelve feet between houses on most of these lots. I know when the beer fridge is being opened and when some lights up a joint.

Oh he was mad when he found the power out. Had to close the garage door by hand. Off he went to the store to buy a battery operated fan to hang around your neck. Batteries and an extra lantern incase the power was out longer than they said.

So.... We are surviving the heat wave. At home in the desert I would put a plastic chair in the shower and cool off the easy way. Son eschewed the idea. Then I suggested he take the dog outside and give her the bath she so sorely needs.... They'd both get wet and one would get clean... Win Win.... Um nope.

So I took my little fan and went to bed around 5 oclock... It was marvelous...
