Hello Fellow Poultry Proponent,

Can you believe it has been three months since our last newsletter? A lot has happened since we started into 2008, but even more excitement is on the horizon. Here are just a few of the highlights of what's been going on over at BYC:

7,000 Community Members!
Back at the end of January we had a contest to win a $20 BYC gift certificate for the member that could guess when we'd hit the 7,000 member mark. A few members were really optimistic and thought it would only take a month. Others weren't familiar with the power of Spring fever and BYC membership and guessed as far out as July 31st! Well, on March 4th our 7,000th member signed up (much earlier than most people expected). Congratulations to tx_dane_mom for guessing the exact day we'd hit 7,000 members and for winning the $20 gift certificate to the BYC store. If you ask me, we'll add the next 1,000 members even quicker... we're seeing about 30 new friends signing up to the BYC forum every day. You can see the contest details here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=30261

New BYC Forum Moderators:
With all the new and existing members posting over 2,200 posts daily (that's more than 1.5 posts for every minute of every day) we needed to add some new people to our already amazing BYC Staff. We are elated to announce that both of the people we invited to become members of the BYC Staff accepted. Please join us in welcoming kstaven & MissPrissy as our newest BYC Moderators!!!
https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=35128

New Forum - Online Poultry Show:
If there is one thing our community is great at it is showing off pictures of their birds! For this reason we're experimenting with an "Online Poultry Show". Members organize the shows, members post pictures, and members judge the winners. This is still a work in progress and we're working out the kinks, but we anticipate that this will be a fun and exciting ongoing part of BYC. See more details in the new section here:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewforum.php?id=32

Buy / Sell / Trade / Giveaway:
Our "BST" section is super busy! Come see what people are offering and what others are looking to buy. Also, if you quilt or crochet you should check out the two swaps going:
Quilts: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=36631
Crochet
: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=36812

Related
- BYC Sister Site: www.TheEasyGarden.com
Many community members requested that we add a gardening section to BYC. We were considering it when we realized that our chickens would revolt if they saw a popular gardening section develop on BackYardChickens.com. This being the case we snuck off and created a sister site to BYC, www.TheEasyGarden.com. Come on over and sign up... just don't let your feathered friends know where you're going... nobody likes a jealous chicken!

We're expecting March and April to be HUGE months at BYC so don't miss out on any of the fun. Be on the lookout for more contests and games with great prizes!

We'll see you in the forum!

BYC Friends,

It is crazy to think that at least 2,000 new members of this community have never received a www.BackyardChickens.com newsletter! We're either not sending these out enough or we've got a ton of new people joining BYC every day. Well, I guess the answer is BOTH!
smile.png

Who Knew So Many People Love Chickens?
Seems like just yesterday we were celebrating 7,000 BYC members. Well, we rushed by 8,000 and then 9,000 and we're adding about 50 new friends every day! It is so much fun to see newbie members from a year ago that are now helping the new flock of first time chicken owners. Anybody up for a "Chicken in every BackYard" campaign? (and we all know you can't stick with just one chicken)

New BYC Shirts -"Chillin With My Peeps"
By popular demand we've added a new shirt to the BYC store. Show your support for BYC by sporting this fun new shirt:

http://www.coopedup.net/store/

BYC Sponsors
As the forum grows (can you read 2,500 new posts per day!?) we've been keeping up on the backend with server upgrades. Thankfully we've got a great bunch of sponsors that make it possible for us to keep the forum accessable to the thousands of people that visit every day. Here are the BYC Forum sponsors. Some have been with us from the beginning and some are new. Please visit their sites and let them know you are very glad they are sponsoring BYC!

www.IdealPoultry.com - Breeding farms & hatchery - breeds chickens, bantams& ducks
www.MyPetChicken.com - Everything you need to get started: including baby chicks, chicken coops, accessories & books
www.EggCartons.com - Discount supplier of egg cartons, egg boxes, egg trays & poultry supplies
www.Henspa.com - Maker of the "Ultimate Backyard Coop". With and without wheels

Best April Fools Ever
What a hoot! Hopefully you were on the forum on April 1, 2008 to partake of the absolute fun we all had. If you missed out on the confusion and sheer craziness you can read all about it here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=448407

BYC
Coop Design Contest - Win $20 Certificate - Ends 5/1/08
Want to show the world how cool your coop is and also win a $20 gift certificate to the BYC store? Add a BYC coop page into the coop design contest:

IMPORTANT: Even if you don't think you have a "pretty coop" and/or aren't interested in winning the contest, we still need you to create a coop design page that will help the community and future chicken owners! Simply follow the instructions at the link below.
https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=37373

New BYC Forum Moderators
Well, seeing that we've just about doubled the number of members to our community, we've tried to keep up by adding moderators. The existing staff put their collective noggins together and pick some peeps that have proven themselves as helpful, mature, and level headed community members. We then run them through a gauntlet of questions, FBI level background screeening, and finally a lie detector test with a broody hen on their lap. Well, of the many that were called, here are the ones that were chosen:

Hey Chicken Enthusiasts,

Time again for another BackyardChickens newsletter! Here's what's going on at BYC:

Forty New Coop Pages Added:
Our coop design contest ended in May and we were so impressed with the submissions we ended up choosing three winners! The timing for these new coop pages couldn't have been better! Thousands of new chicken owners have young birds that are ready to leave the bator for a larger home. People are anxiously visiting the coop design section of the site looking for ideas on coops for their flocks.

But, even with all the these great coops, we always want more! If you've taken pictures of your coop, please put them together with a few sentences and submit them to BYC. Details here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=55148

BYC
Image Hosting:
One of the most frequently submitted requests for what our members want added to BYC was the ability to quickly and easily upload photos to the forum. On 5/6 we hit the 10,000 member mark and decided to celebrate the occasion with a new feature: BYC Image Hosting! To learn how to submit your images to BYC, click here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=52145

BYC Traveling Mascot(s):
2_byc-mascots.jpg

Introducing Wally the chicken and Howard the duck, the two new BYC traveling mascots. Over 100 people have already signed up to host a mascot. Click on the link below to join in the fun, see pics of where the mascots have been and where they are going. https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=58009

Buy Sell Trade Upgraded:
One of the busiest sections of BYC is the Buy Sell Trade forum. With our earlier version, you'd see everything from chick eggs to pigmy goats listed side by side. You'd also see your post quickly fall to the bottom of the page just a few moments after posting. We've made some exciting changes that have really made a huge difference. Keep in mind, even with these changes it is still VERY important for members to post their State and details in the subject of the posting. Read more here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=62915

BYC
Crazy Egg Swap:
Looking to interact with some of your BYC friends? Looking to hatch some exciting new eggs? Check out this fun egg swap (already 160 pages of swapping fun): https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=59843

Progressive
Chick Identification Pictures:
Most (if not all) of us have dealt with trying to identify the breed and/or gender of our young chicks. A group of our members got together and started a wonderful project to make this process easier. Please help support this noble endeavor by submitting your chick pics for the good of the community:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=61033

Another Friendly Reminder:
With over 3,000 new members to our community since the last newsletter we've got a lot of people who may not know about these important threads below. If you haven't already done so, please visit and reply to the following fun threads:

Some people think that Fall and Winter is meant to be a time of rest, a time to take a break after a crazy fun-filled Summer. Well, this hasn't been the case at BYC! We've had a TON of stuff going on since the last newsletter and a bunch of things planned over the next few weeks. This being the case we thought we should get this newsletter out ASAP!

Forum Stats:
We zipped past 16,000 members and then 17,000 members, and soon to be 18,000 members! All of you are still pretty chatty, which is evident by the 1.1 million posts on the forum! 45 new members a day are signing up and the group is posting 3,500 times a day (2.4 posts every minute of every day).

To help keep our members a bit more organized we upgraded the "online" member list on the bottom of the homepage of the forum. One new addition is tracking the most people ever online. If everyone logs in when they get this email we may be able to beat the current max!
https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=97736

Double Image Storage:
We all love to show off pics of our feathered friends. To help with this obsession we've doubled the amount of picture storage space for our members.
https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=90537

BackYardChickens University:

We're really excited to announce the new BYC University clothing line! We've worked hard on the design and took the suggestions from our members regarding which clothing color options to make available. To help make sure you get what you want, we've setup a form to take pre-orders (no pre-payment needed). The pre-orders will close on Sunday evening and we'll put the order in on Monday. If you want one of these, make sure you get your pre-order submited ASAP! Click the link below to see more sample images and to pre-order:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=98835

Upgrades to the BYC Member Pages:
We've been listening to your feedback and have added a pageview counter to the bottom of every member's BYC page. You can check out all the pages by going to the link below. Please try your hand at creating your own page to be added to the main BYC site!
https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/pages.php

BYC Coop Contest Winners:
We had so many great submissions that we ended up giving out a ton more prizes than expected:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=92970

A new coop contest has begun here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=92959

Upgrades to the BYC Coop Pages:
Over the years we've been manually adding the amazing coop pages submitted by our members to BYC. After a lot of design changes and programming work we improved the update process and the navigation of the coop pages. Within each coop page you'll see links to the previous and next coops in that section! NOTE: If you have a coop page submitted to BYC but do NOT have these links at the top of your coop page, please let us know!!! Read more about this upgrate here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=95604

Thanks
to everyone for making BYC such a wonderful place to be.

This is the first BYC Newsletter of 2009 and we're really excited about the new year. We know this is going to be the biggest and best year BYC has ever seen and we're so thrilled to have you be a part of it!

Below are some highlights since the last newsletter:

BYC In USA Today:
We're seeing more and more proof of the growing excitement (addiction) towards raising backyard chickens. This trend is evident in the many news stories covering the craze.
