Well Here it Is, 3 Hour "Quick Coop" PIC HEAVY!

You probably already answered this somewhere but how did you keep the bucket/nesting boxes from rolling around? Are they attached to the 2X4 or the back wall?

I just took a wood screw and screwed the bucket to the 2x4 that they are sitting on. I was going to screw each bucket to each other as well through the sides but it was plenty stable with just the one in the bottom. You can move the whole row of nests at once just by picking up the 2x4. Simple and ease of removal makes for quick and easy coop cleaning.

Ok, I spent about 2 days going through this forum looking at everybody's coop and run photos , and yours is about the simplest most functional design that I have found. However, the use of the chain link fence sections and all of the sheetmetal on the sides and roof had to have been expensive.

I am using your basic layout as my guide, with treated posts and wire instead of the chain link sections, and I am only going to use metal on my roof. Starting on my coop and run now. Overall dimensions will be 20'x10 feet with the coop at 4'x10'. Should be good for 10 chickens.

I don't know, but I would guess you spent between $1,200-1,500 dollars in yours. I think I can get mine in for around $400. Can't do it in 3 hours, but a good hard weekend or two. I am going to photo document my constuction steps and post.

Thanks for the great plan

Hey there!
Basically on mine i used what i had on hand, and in a hurry as i had hens coming in a day or two at the time and needed something quick. In other words basically no out of pocket expense other than the tin and the netting. The tin cost me basically $1 a running foot. The roof had 5 12 footers so that cost about $60 and the 3 sides fully enclosed took 9 10 foot sheets so that's $90 and the front i put on 2 6 footers to partially close it off only so another $12. So basically my out of pocket cost was less than $200. If you had to go buy all new kennel panels etc then yes it would be quite a bit more. But i am all about recycling what i have on hand unless it will end up looking like a turd then i will spend a little to make it look decent. Part of being married and all! LOL

What an absolutely fabulous and clever way to build a coop !

Yes, it definately belongs in our coop section.

Please tell me your dog patrols the area at night too. With no hardware cloth on the vent holes at the top too, it would be very easy for a predator to get into the coop.

awesome coop...the only thing i see id that the roost is made of 2 x 4's...a little large...they like something they can wrap their feet around to get a firm grip...probably so they dont fall when their sleeping...lol...just rip a 2 x 4 in half, sand the edges, and replace the 2 x 4's with the ripped one...easy fix!
shaun

Actually, chickens prefer not to wrap their feet around roosts the way other birds do (unless they don't have a choice). Because of a chicken's size, a lot of weight is put on the pads of their feet when it is concentrated in one area. The 2x4s will work fine. In cold weather they hunker down over their toes to keep them warm on the flat boards.

Yes she does, She even sleeps about 20 feet from the coop now. She use to sleep on the back porch but now she is sleeping back by the chickens. A couple nights ago she got a great big scary cottontail

Pretty much anything that gets in the back yard that isnt part of our household is toast. Over the last couple years she has gotten a coon (she sucked that one through the fence from the outside, looked like it was trying to squeeze in between the garage and the first fence post, only about half of him made it in) 2 skunks, a dozen or more Ferrel cats (but she leaves ours alone) untold number of black birds that she baits with a few pieces of kibble she purposely leaves in her bucket. She lays under it acting all asleep like and watches for them to swoop into the bucket to steal the kibble then she jumps up and stuffs her head in the bucket and traps them.
She is pretty good about patrolling the property!
