This is what I'd just asked and I could swear I'd heard some where that it's like a 6 month shelf life because it'll mold? I don't know if that's right & I can't remember where I'd heard/read it either. Maybe we can call one of the feed companies to find out?

I would think if kept dry, cool and rodent free it should last a lot longer then 6 months..grain is stored in bins for years at a time.

This is the impression I had always been under that as long as it is kept dry it's ok. Of course we don't have a farm really and so we've never thought of it before but I had actually been thinking about a few chickens etc & then the thought of feed came to mind. That's why I'd thought the idea of the meat birds done in a group would be more cost effective in the end.

I'd heard some where that the cost of food is going to rocket & specifically because of the cost of feed going up. So then the cost of meat goes up as well. It's occured to me to stock my freezer here because in the coming months it's suppose to really go high. And really we can't blame those producers either cause they're just trying to cover their costs too & the same can be said for the farmers growing the grains etc. etc.

I stored scratch from Sept to June in a shed outdoors with no ill effects at all. As long as it's dry it should be fine for a long long time

I'm not sure about a depression *yet* but there is a huge credit crunch happening right now and it's not just about your houses and retirement funds anymore. Banks are reluctant to give any credit at all anymore...even commercial. That will bring on a whole new set of problems.
Your gas bars cannot fill up without credit...companies cannot pay employees without credit, grocery stores cannot fill thier shelves with out credit...understand where I'm going with this? It goes a whole lot deeper than most people think. Don't panic, by any means...but DO make sure you all have some cash on hand...and a well stocked pantry

$2.75 here in ok

I totally agree with you. It will get worse ... but we will stand up again and master the situation. Have faith and do everything possible for your own survival.

Going back to the original title of this post "Well it's official. We're now in a depression"

What is the definition of an economic "depression", and how does the current situation meet that definition?

Since we are not talking about chickens, we might as well make this a meaningful lesson in macroeconomics.

From what I have been able to find, there is no agreed upon definition of what constitutes an economic depression. A recession is defined as at least 2 consecutive quarters of contraction in GDP.

Some simply define a "depression" as a severe recession.

Some describe it as a 10% contraction in GDP.

The current situation most definitely does not meet either of these yet, we are not officially in a recession, but I think we will find out that one either started in July, or October.

A decline in the stock market, no matter how large has nothing to do with economic depression, although the stock market crash of 1929 is generally agreed to have been the catalyst that caused the great depression. But, there are some significant structrualy differences and safeguards in our system now, that did not exist then.

AZ has been in a depression for 4 months thanks to Gov. Janet Napolitano.

AK still has a booming economy thanks to Sarah Palin.
