Hi, I'm new to this site but have visited often over the past two years for tips and advice. I'm hoping someone can shed some light on what might have caused my chicken to get Ill and pass away in the space of three hours.

Summer was a 9 month old well summer and had been fit as a fiddle when I came home from work this evening, I let her out of their pen and in to the garden as I do every day, I went out an hour ago and she was scrunched up away from the other girls on her own, her neck twisted right round and her eyes shut. I picked her up and noticed she had a rattling noise from her chest, she sneezed a few times which I hadn't noticed she had a cold before, her nose wasn't running or anything like that. her legs were very hot and she wouldn't open her eyes much.

She had a full crop and had been absolutely fine when I let her out, she died within an hour of new finding her and 2 hours since she was let out.

Does anyone have any idea what this might have been, I can only think she might have eaten something poisonous and I'm concerned for my other hens.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to BYC!

I am so sorry about your hen. There are several diseases that can cause sudden death, although I have never had it happen in my flock. Heart attacks or hypertension can cause sudden death as well. Unless you had a necropsy on her, you may never know what her cause of death was.

Just keep an eye on your flock for a while. Do health exams frequently just in case.

You might also post this in our emergency section in hopes someone there can shine more light on this than I have...

But I do welcome you to BYC and I hope your flock stays healthy!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about your hen. TwoCrows gave you some good advice and the link to the Emergencies forum to post on. X2 without a necropsy (and maybe not even then) unfortunately you may not be able to figure out what caused her death, if you still have her, you might look her over very closely and see if you can find anything unusual, how is her weight/condition etc. Check over the garden or area were they were and see if you see anything unusual plant wise etc she may have eaten they normally don't touch. Has she been laying eggs normally and acting OK etc lately... If you will consider it there are a number of threads on BYC where people have done a necropsy on their own birds to try and figure out what was going on.

Thank you both for your help! I'll be keeping a close eye on all the others. It's so upsetting and frustrating not being able to help or to even know what it was that caused it!!
