Well, we've taken the plunge... Our first pigeon

Thanks. When I can I am going to see about contacting the breeder. I think this would be best.
We are very happy with him and are working on taming him for perching. He is still shy but we can stroke his chest.
Tomorrow the aviary will be finished. I'll miss him in the house! Lol

Yep, congrats! Like Larry said, you have an old/classic oriental frill. :D A satinette at that. Husband and I have a frill we bought young, and he is very tame. He also is terrible at perching and flying, but that honestly just seems to help with the taming process. He loves to shower with people, and will bath in the puddles at one's feet.

I can just imagine the showers. Lol think I'll pass on those.
He perched on my eldest daughters arm today and hubby was able to stroke him!
He still doesn't have a name since hubby says he doesn't believe in naming them. Growing up his neighbor had a hundred or so and his excuse is they didn't name them all. I say that doesn't work since it is his first an we will never have that many.
I think I will name him Bert. Since Bert liked pigeons and Ernie liked ducks. The kids will love it! Lmao

Hi! I just acquired 2 Kormorner homers yesterday totally by accident.....if there is such a thing with us bird nuts.
Went to a show in Sarnia, and they were given to me because I kept admiring them.
Do they eat mealworms, or anything like that? I was giving some to my Serama and put a couple in with the pigeons (side by side cages in the living room). They have not eaten or taken water yet.

Off the topic....Gunnar? What nationality? I'm icelandic, so I have a lot of Gunnars in my family.

Also, crazyland, I love that comment about "man of few words way" I'm still trying to interpret my husband's signals on this one. lol

I am part Icelandic, and part Danish. I have a Serama Silkie hybrid, although I am not proud of it....
I bought mine at a show, and they took a while to open up. are they in a cage, or in a room, or an aviary, or what? I buy a seed mix at my feed store, and they particularly love sunflower seeds. but beware- they are very fatty. Stick with cracked corn and peas for staples. And also, put out a few water dishes. if they spill food in one, they may not eat from it..... or drink from it.

I kne/2w with a name like that.... Very cool. I'm only 1/2 Icelandic, but you know those roots run deep. lol

I still have the birds in large cages in the basement for quarantine. I have some purina nutriblend gold and green that I use with my Serama. Becomes a little more cost effective because they don't like to dust bathe in it. The crumbles make expensive litter.

How about safflower seed? It was on sale at our farm store.

What a lovely pigeon!

Its an 'old frill' pigeon. I used to keep them, and white racing homers, when I lived in the UK. You have made me so sad because I had to give them away when I moved the Thailand. I can not keep them here as I am in a condo.

After your birds have been in the aviary a month of two, they should start to breed. Then you can let them out to fly free. They are a lovely sight to see circling around you roof.

They only need a basic diet of seeds and grains, and make sure you give them a pigeon mineral supplement, like a peck block and pigeon grit. I found they don't eat much green stuff, and they don't need it. It can make them have very runny droppings. Also if they free fly sometimes they can peck about at what they need. They always seem to know exactly what they need in their diet.

Thanks for the photo. Brings back lovely memories for me!
