Hi all! My female (99% we think🤞🏻🤞🏻) Welsh Harlequin duckling has a strange raspy voice. My theory is she has a crooked neck at that is causing her voice to be raspy, when she was little she would drink water, throw her head back until it touched her back and most likely fall over. She eventually grew out of it but still tips her head back a bit (I think maybe her neck was in a funny position in the egg?)

Are Welsh Harlequins like Rouens? As in they only get male feathering at 12-ish weeks? She has female colouring, but don't think she's a pure Welshie because no black bill, unless the colouring doesn't come until later?

Just wanted to know everyones thoughts. She is sexed so thats why we think she's female, but the raspy voice keeps putting me off. Just wanted to know everyones thoughts ☺️

Welsh harlequins take up to a year or two to develop full male coloring (or just full coloring in general). Black bill comes later too. It sounds like this duck may just be a drake.

How old?

How long has the duck’s neck been wry?
since we got it, i have heard a small quack (i think), in between the raspy voice.

It might help to upload a video. Their voices usually don’t change from peeps until they’ve mostly feathered out. You won’t be getting real quacks at this age no matter what, but a female usually is louder than a male even if his voice isn’t necessarily that different.

I will try and upload a video later today? It is very hard as I;m on a laptop. Her peep isn't any longer than the other two (which I know are girls becuase they have started making little quack/peeps) its just the raspiness of her voice, do you think it could be related to the neck thing?

I would hate for it to be a drake because we currently have 1 drake and 1 duck (adults) and I know you have to have 4-5 ducks per drake so we would have to rehome her/him, and I am already so attached 😥

I mean, it’s more likely just a drake but I guess it’s not impossible that its airway is slightly blocked by the curve in its neck, therefore affecting vocal output. You’re treating it, right?

No, I wouldn’t know how to treat it. Is it something that is treatable? Also we don’t actually know if it has a crooked neck it’s just my theory.

How do you send videos?

What do you mean you’re not sure its neck is crooked? Usually that’s pretty visible lol.
