I ordered some WH hens for the spring, and those lovely ladies make me even more excited than I already was.

I went to TSC & spent way too much money on bigger waterers & automatic feeders today. I have also started to collect materials for the March build of my duck compound. All the guys on the property went from very skeptical to very enthusiastic in less than a year. I feel blessed. I was just going to get WHs & they asked me to order Cayugas, too. They are sold on ducks.

Yep- once you get past the messy juvenile stage- ducks are so easy. And comical. And boy they can spit out eggs like there's no tomorrow!

I just ordered some Saxony eggs- just for something different. Love the Cayugas too though.

I agree. I am not a huge fan of ducklings. They are very cute, for about 2 days. Or, even better, in other people's pictures.
I love ducks though. My Anconas are gorgeous, and I am excited to add to the flock.
I am turning the old duck house into a brooder pen that abuts the duck compound. I think that will make me like ducklings more. I plan to keep them near us for a week or two so they get used to us, then move them to the outdoor brooder.
My BIL is an electrician & volunteer fireman, and is running electricity down to the new location. We are adding a big pond area, rain barrels, and a forage garden.

Hi All!

I have an FYI about bill color and a question about SOP's of WH.

I recently received an email from Holderread's Farm answering my question about bill sexing WH ducklings. Mr. Holderread has been breeding his WH to be closer to the British Standard for the past several years, which means there is less of a difference in bill colors between the ducklings. He doesn't pay much attention to duckling bill color any longer.

I am intending to hatch occasional clutches for local 4-H'ers to show, so am curious about the differences between the American SOP and the British SOP. Can anyone help me with this?

Thanks,

Tahai

Hey everybody!

I read on another thread that this one had a lot of info on it, so I started reading. (that took awhile, its a pretty long thread now). I learned a lot about the WH breed. Personally I'm hoping for some GWH's but I'd be happy with silver too.

I'm expecting my two-three ducklings in about six weeks. I'm so excited! I'm not sure how i'm going to find the patience to wait that long for them.

I'm actually suppose to go pick up three Silver Appleyard duckling tomorrow, as well. Thanks for all the helpful info!

I just sent in an order to fowl and my Welsh Harlequins will be shipped out on April 23rd. Wanted a place to get a small order and not straight run. I am so looking forward to them. Hopefully they will be lovely!
