fuzzi's Chicken Journal

Notice the Sussex eggs are all different looking, yet all from the same breed...
My Barred Plymouth Rocks are like this. They're half or possibly full sisters but all three lay very different-looking eggs. I'm more likely to mistake one of them for another breed's egg than I am to get confused about which Rock laid which egg.

I built a second hoop coop for the extras that I wasn't going to breed. That way I didn't have worry about which egg came from which hen.

I have been thinking about downsizing a little, and I am seriously considering letting go two of my roosters. I will not breed Silas, he's not to standard, and he's still rough when mounting the hens. So, why, besides being sentimental, am I keeping him? Also, Jacob is 9 months old, looks nice, but I don't need him. Zaccheus, his sire, is a very good roo, a proven breeder, good with his flock, and just two years old.

There's an auction coming up in a week.

Got my back yard mowed today, mostly.

Elderberry on the left has really filled out! The one on the right is doing fine, it was a bare twig less than a year ago.

I've not finished preparing the rest of the raised bed gardens. I wouldn't plant seeds now, not until we get rain. It's a waste of time and water to try when the ground is this parched. You can see the drought conditions more clearly in the "grass" areas.

Yarrow doing well!

Joe Pye weed survived! Time to finish preparing its bed.

Two of three Rose of Sharon bushes survived, and I found a beautyberry sprout to transplant, putting it next to the Carolina sweetshrub.

My pollinator garden plans are starting to take shape!
