Welsummer and/or Cuckoo Marans?

I have both breeds and I like both breeds vey much. The Welsummers are by far the best layers but the Marans are as good as any other breeds I have.

My cuckoo maran hens are very friendly but they do not lay the dark egg.I'm dissapointed in that! They say chocolate colored but mine are more like hot chocolate. Next year I'll hatch some for butchering and see if the meat is as good as they say....

WOW! This was helpful my girlfriend is considering getting some marans in the spring just for the sole purpose of having those gorgeous choc. eggs around but I guess she would be way better off with Wellies if she's just looking for the best egg layer! Thanks Guys! Keri

I would say Wellsummers they are much better layers in my experiance check out www.whitmorefarm.com he has the best wellies I have ever seen. They also have Black and Blue copper marans.

If you go to the above link & then click on Welsummers you will see a tray of eggs.
The forth from the left in second row is the colour of a Marans.

Go with a Wellsummer.

While my Golden Cuckoo lays a nice LARGE semi dark egg, they are few and far between.

nice to know all this. I want the dark eggs also. I just ordered my first eggs to be shipped off ebay - went with the Wheaton Marans. Anyone have those? Looks like I need to get some welsummers also!

If you just want an all-around nice bird that lays pretty eggs, go with the Wellies. If you enjoy tinkering and challenges and long term projects, go with Marans. I personally wouldn't go with Cuckoos, just because I'm not fond of the cuckoo pattern. My personal favorite Marans are the wheatens.
