Welsummer or Speckled Sussex

Got 4 babies to give to my broody. One of the babies did not make it, it was either a Welsummer or an SS. At first I thought the SS was the casualty but now I am not so sure.

I think this is a SS because of the pink feet and the upward eyeliner? Am I correct?

My bet is that it's a Sussex. Like you said, it has very white, pinkish legs with no hint of yellow. You'll know for sure when it feathers out in a few weeks.

I think you're going to have to wait, both breeds look pretty much identical that small.

Ok good, my lurking on byc for so long seems to have instilled some knowledge on me lol

I got day old chicks. 2 welsummer and 2 speckled sussex 2 rir. 1 rir died same nite and was replaced with ss.
They were all identical except the rir.
BUT
there was a difference very early-by 4-5 days.
Welsummers legs were darker
Sussex pink-white.

That's what I was suspecting too when I reread the thread!! Usually Speckled Sussex have a big contrast with their white bellies
