I purchased some new day old chicks from Cackle back in April and I'm wondering if I have been given a cockerel. I ordered besides some other chicks 2 welsummer pullets but recieved 3. One has a big comb and wattle while the other two has hardly nothing showing. 20190706_164545.jpg 20190706_164547.jpg
Here is two together facing each other.

Yep, that's a male.
Comb color tells that tale, and their breast feather should be markedly different.
They are deffently different on the breast area. These new batch we havent handled at all other than just a minute ago I grabbed ahold of the one with wattles and comb to look at it better. We havent had a cockerel with our flock so this will be a first. The older girls should keep him in his place I hope.

The Wellie cock I had here was a great bird.
I kept hands off him after about 6 weeks except for monthly exams off the roost after dark...just often enough for him to know 'they wont die if human touches them'. :D
Have always handled females more than males.

Our first 6 barred rocks we treated like babies and they still jump right up on our laps, next 6 red Six links we disnt touch much when they were younger and these latest 8 new chicks we havent touched much at all and now I'm kinda glad with a cockerel being in the mix and only realizing it in last day or so. Hoping he works out and isnt a terror, he already stands and stairs at my Malinous when she gets to close to the girls. Your welsummer looks beautiful

I think it's important to be able to touch any bird if needed..a delicate but essential balance with a cock/erel involved. I handle the pullets a lot when they are young, and the 'good' males learned it's not an issue.
