Welsummer Rooster Termperament?

Hey, amazondoc, I am definitely in extreme N. Ga, less than a mile from the NC line and maybe 10 miles from the TN juncture of NC, GA and TN. I think I have three or four cockerels, if I'm doing the color sexing right. Just stay tuned!

-psst- Cyn, your link in your siggy isn't working....

Thanks, Corey. I'll see if I can fix it. AD, I'll definitely keep you in mind when it comes time to liquidate a couple of these handsome roosters.

***Try the link now. Don't know why it quit working.

Hey! I've kind of had the same question about Welsummer roosters! My bf really like the bright colors of the OEG but I heard a lot of stuff about them being more noisy than usually and kind of mean. I saw some pictures of adult Welsummer roos and thought that maybe these guys have that cool multicolored look without being quite as mean. Does anyone know what the truth is? Or how to compare?

Hey Cyn,
Sorry just came across this thread.
I have had more than my share of welsummer roosters and have only had 1 act aggressive towards people, but it was only when you stirred up his ladies. If you got them a squakin' he came a runnin'. But for the most part they are just as laid back as the ladies and beautiful to look at.
I have 4 roosters right now and all are sweet.

As for comparing to your old english games, the answer is in the name. The game birds are beautiful, but were bred to fight, so instinctivly aggressive. Not all are, but more likely to be than your welsummer roosters. If color is all you are interested in, then the welsummer is a good choice.

p.s. I have also had no problem keeping several roosters in the same coop with the ladies. I try to raise up the ones that I am planning to keep together, so they don't have to go through the first meeting fight ritual, but have also introduced as adults and have no trouble with rooster fights either.

My Welsummer roo is never aggressive. He isn't tame, I can't just go pick him up but he is gentle and even when he shows his dominance to the younger roos its not like he is out to kill them like the OEG's I used to have were.

I had a Welsummer Rooster last year that was a little over one year old. I would describe his temperament as non-aggressive for the most part. I did have another rooster about the same age when I brought "Elvis" home so there was a bit of sparring the first night to establish pecking order. After that first night however he kept his distance.

He was never aggressive toward me or the wife which is NOT what I can say about Hank - our Barred Rock. Hank loves to wait until you have your back turned to him and then he'll run up and sock you one.

Elvis, the Welsummer, wasn't so gentle that he'd just let me walk up and pick him up. He was fairly flighty like the rest of my Welsummers. However, I think that might have been different had I raised him from a chick and spent more time with him.

I have a baby cockerel and three pullets now and plan to get another of the same soon. My plan is to focus my breeding programs on my Ameraucanas and my Welsummers so I should know more in the next couple of years but from everything I've heard or seen, Welsummers are a pretty docile breed.

Hope that helps.

God Bless,

Thanks for all the input. My problem is that I want to keep a rooster from the Welsummers, the Ameraucanas, the nice dark Rhode Island Reds and of course, my beloved Barred Rocks. I dont have pens for all those separate breeds, so I need to figure out which ones I am going to keep the boys from. Decisions, decisions....

Well, you hear about a lot of RIR cockerals being mean, mine sure was, so that would be a breed that might be easier to cut out. But then again, people do have nice ones as well.

BRs, you HAVE to keep atleast one cockeral, everyone knows that!

Welsummers, again, you just gotta, lol. They are gorgeous, and it seems like they are a nice bird.

Ameraucanas, you had bad luck with Scout, I have good luck with Bear... it just depends, as you know.

I'd say BRs and Welsummers! But I sure do love those Ameraucana cockerals.
