So my hens now get to go out in an open but fence area to range a bit in the evening. Within minutes of being out in the this much larger space the chickens seemed to split into 2 groups (I have 5 total chickens). If anyone flapped their wings another group would immediately surround it and get up on their toes, puff their neck feathers and hop around.

In between these little turf-like wars they would graze and be fine. But they were immediately in each others beaks if anyone tried any sort of flapping or fast motion. What was this all about? Any ideas?

When my birds do that the other takes it as a challenge and they bounce breasts off each other and then one backs down, pecking order thing I guess.

I love watching these girls. I am sure my neighbors think I am crazy. I put up a temporary fence for a grazing area that I put them in for a few hours in the evening when I am out there gardening. Last night I pulled up a chair and brought a book. Very relaxing AND entertaining. I love my chickens.
