Good to know you!

Glad you'll be coming home soon....no place like home!

Nobody in WV out there doing chickens for a food supply? I find it hard to believe that my state has all pet owners and no one doing livestock. C'mon, hillbillies! Represent!

Anyone have any information on the Poultry Auction in Alderson WV or any other auctions in wv, va , nc or tn?

Our neighbor went to it a couple years ago and talked about how good it was. Im just having a hard time finding any info on it.

I've never heard of it.  WV seems to be a pretty dead state for poultry unless it's commercial or pets.
no kidding. I was pretty disappointed to find out that the Putnam fair board won't allow the 4-H kids to show poultry at the fair, even if they abide by the state rules and give their chickens a blood test.
We will be raising chickens for food, not pets, though I can't say I won't get attached to one, given my animal rescue background. But the reason we wanted to get into this is because I abhor the commercial industry and how they raise the birds, and want to feed my family the safest and healthiest food possible. I bought some birds from area farmers when they had them but they were very expensive and so few and far between. We have 15-25 cornish cx coming in August. I'll fix that ;-) I say 15-25 because my friend ordered more to get the next price break and we haven't yet figured out our numbers. She has a farm and was ordering 100 in that batch for them to sell.

Anyhoo, I'm in Putnam County, new to chickens, but anxious to get started. You're right, @Beekissed most of the people you want to connect with likely don't even have a computer! Though some of them are starting to. They're just playing games and trying to figure out email, though some of my family are on Facebook finally :)

If you read the whole thread you know I moved to SC from WV. I plan on moving back as soon as possible!

I don't have a lot of chickens right now: Crested Cream Legbars, Araucanas, Brown Leghorn, Cuckoo Marans and Arkansas Blue eggers hatching eggs on the way.

When I get back to good ol' WV I am going to visit Bee. Maybe by then she will have an extra White Rock cockerel we can make a deal on!

About the chicken shows at fairs........ because of avian flu shows in WV have to be strictly monitored. There is a livestock sale barn in Moorefield that has a small poultry sale before the cattle sale starts. But the poultry sale is banned when there has been a recent avian flu outbreak/or suspicion of an outbreak.

Spreading of avian flu could potentially cause wide spread financial disaster for farmers. There are very strict laws for quarantine when there is an outbreak. Any flocks that are found to have the disease are immediately destroyed. Flcks in the surrounding area (for miles) are quarantined.
