West Virginia Flock Talk

If you read the whole thread you know I moved to SC from WV. I plan on moving back as soon as possible!

I don't have a lot of chickens right now: Crested Cream Legbars, Araucanas, Brown Leghorn, Cuckoo Marans and Arkansas Blue eggers hatching eggs on the way.

When I get back to good ol' WV I am going to visit Bee. Maybe by then she will have an extra White Rock cockerel we can make a deal on!

About the chicken shows at fairs........ because of avian flu shows in WV have to be strictly monitored. There is a livestock sale barn in Moorefield that has a small poultry sale before the cattle sale starts. But the poultry sale is banned when there has been a recent avian flu outbreak/or suspicion of an outbreak.

Spreading of avian flu could potentially cause wide spread financial disaster for farmers. There are very strict laws for quarantine when there is an outbreak. Any flocks that are found to have the disease are immediately destroyed. Flcks in the surrounding area (for miles) are quarantined.

I understand why they do it, but it's county by county. A nearby county allows the shows, but all participants have to do the blood test as per state law. I can't understand if they produce the results of the test why one county will allow poultry to be shown and the next county won't. Liability issue but now they're scrambling bc of the pig virus. It's always going to be something and people just need to learn to take precautions. That's the point of raising livestock in 4-H, I would imagine. Part of it is biosecurity. It would be pretty sad to have empty barns at fair time. Jmo

Btw, I'm not getting onto you, @enola, just annoyed at our fair board because they specifically said they won't allow it bc of liability, when participants probably have to sign a waiver anyway, and the state has put rules into place that they deem sufficient for protection. As strict as WV is on these things, I think banning live poultry at the fair is overkill. Not all the kids have the resources or space to raise cattle. Mine also is not going to be big enough to handle the lambs for awhile, not that we want one. I don't like lamb meat as much as I like chicken, and we certainly don't need those as pets. Haha Of course, I could take up spinning and dying yarn! My husband would love that. More hobbies. Lol ;-) I know they auction them, I'm just being funny.
We're just now learning, but this is the first farm animal my kiddo has taken an interest in raising, and with 4-H so prevalent in the area, my first inclination was to find out if he could show them. Via posterboard only :(
I listen to a podcast out of Boise and she was interviewing kids getting ready for the fair and showing their chickens and it got me wondering about it.

Btw, HI! Where in SC are you?

I didn't feel at all like you were upset with me. I just thought you didn't know about the economy based decisions about poultry. I am glad to know you have an understanding of what is going on. And I agree about the overkill......

I am 10 minutes from down town Laurens SC. A beautiful area and I love the mild winters. BUT, I miss the mountains......

And all of my family, except my son is in MD, VA, PA and WV. And with 12 grand children it's time for me to go back home!

You are right, probably a lot of people in WV don't have computers.......

What kind of chickens do you have ?

I also have family in D.C.

And speaking of computer access. Here in SC where I live I have to hook to the web by my phone.......

BECAUSE THERE IS NO ACCESS TO THE WEB THROUGH LAND LINES OR DISH NETWORK OR CABLE!!!

Can you believe it? ? !!

oh, sheesh, NO!! LOL
we have high speed through our phone line. It's relatively new and not blazing fast, but enough to use a smart tv and roku. We did the satellite thing for awhile but I got spoiled with the speeds I had at Marshall. Lol
I didn't mean people didn't have computers or access, really, just the old farmers don't tend to fiddle with that stuff. Some are starting to. Heck, many of them are getting on Facebook as a way to keep up with the grandkids. But, it's usually us women honestly. My husband doesn't do fb or forums and neither do my Dad or stepdad.
It's a small world! I was born near DC and have family out there. I was asking about where you live because I'm not familiar with much other than the coast. My stepdad and his wife have a place in Conway. I agree, you sound like it's about time to come home!
There are places I'd like to live for awhile but nothing fits quite like here for me. I've been here since I was 2-3 and grew up on a WV dirt road. Once I married my husband and moved '' back out on the hill''...lol... I think it's safe to say I'm staying put. Wow, especially on a day like today, when we've spent hours at the greenhouse and gardening. So peaceful. I love getting my hands in some good ol WV red clay. Haha
Nice chatting with you. I hope I don't make you too homesick!

I just looked you up on the map, @enola and realized I've never even been to that part of the state! When we've driven through to Augusta to see family we were on I77. SO much of our great country yet to explore... :)

If you're near Morgantown, please plan to attend the workshop!

Don't need it, but thanks!
